Scotland U16 teams do the double to finish Colwyn Bay Rugby Festival on a high
Scotland U16 Blue and Red teams both defeated their Welsh opponents in the final Colwyn Bay Rugby Festival fixtures to return home with three from four wins over the course of the six-day event.Tuesday marked the final day of the festival where Scotland U16 Blues ran seven tries past RGC to win 47-5, a precursor to Scotland U16 Reds defeating Scarlets 27-19 later that afternoon.On Saturday, Scotland U16 Blues lost by one point to Dragons 14-15 and Scotland U16 Reds held a clean sheet to win 53-0 against RGC.Scotland U16 Blues Head Coach, Steve Lawrie, said: “I’m extremely proud of the boys’ effort this week.They were determined to rectify Saturday’s mistakes, which cost them their win against Dragons and they did exactly that and more yesterday by defeating RGC by 42 points.”Scotland U16 Reds Head Coach, Bryan Easson, added: “I’m thrilled that the Reds secured two from two wins at the Colwyn Bay Rugby Festival.They excelled against RGC and worked hard to overcome Scarlets after being down by nine points at half-time. They kept calm, remained patient and stuck to the team systems we have been working hard on and that paid off.”Following this festival, the coaches will now look to select a group of 20-25 players to attend a two-week training camp this July in Valladolid, Spain. MATCH PLAY – Saturday 8 April Scotland U16 Blues v DragonsScotland U16 Blues started off strong against Dragons, with back-row Alex Marsh scoring the first try of the game after four minutes and wing Adam Scott adding the extras.Dragons responded with a try of their own but failed to convert. Brandon Mills then strengthened the Scots’ lead with a try before half-time, which Scott converted.HT: Scotland U16 Blues 14-5 DragonsThe Welsh side came out fighting to score their second try within a minute of the second-half but still trailed by four points after missing another conversion.Dragons scored a third try in the 60th minute to take the lead for the first time in the game and saw out the match to win 14-15.FT: Scotland U16 Blues 14-15 Dragons Scotland U16 Reds v RGCScotland U16 Reds got off to a flying start at Parc Eirias to rack up six tries and three conversions before the half-time whistle. HT: Scotland U16 Reds 36-0 RGCTheir scoring streak continued and the Scots’ solid defence denied RGC a single point for the duration of the match.A total of nine tries were scored by Scotland U16 Reds through Dean Anderson (2), Jamie Dobie, Cameron Scott, Alex Harley, Matthew Currie (all first half), Scott King, Finlay McNeill and Addy Robertson (second half). Full-back Nathan Moffat added the extras in the first half (3), while Scott converted McNeill’s try in the second half. FT: Scotland U16 Reds 53-0 RGC MATCH PLAY – Tuesday 11 April Scotland U16 Blues v RGCScotland U16 Blues dominated the first-half and scored three tries through Andrew Hughes, Brandon Mills and Callum Brown.Scrum-half Finn McIlwraith secured two from three conversions to give his side the lead at the interval. HT: Scotland U16 Blues 19-0 RGCThe young Scots continued to hold possession in the second-half and in the 45th minute replacement Colin Taylor scored his team’s fourth try, with McIlwraith adding the extras.Tries followed from Rory Jackson and Nick McAllister – both converted by Adam Scott – before RGC muscled their way over the whitewash.However, the visitors weren’t finished yet and front-row replacement Scott Clelland touched down the last try of the match, which Scott converted to cement their win.FT: Scotland U16 Blues 47-5 RGC Scotland U16 Reds v ScarletsScotland U16 Reds had a mixed start to their match with Scarlets scoring a converted try after just five minutes.The Scots soon responded through winger Dean Anderson but were still behind after an unsuccessful conversion.Finlay McNeill followed in his fellow winger’s footsteps to score a second Scottish try to take his side into the lead, but Scarlets worked hard to turn things around and added another two tries to their tally.HT: Scotland U16 Reds 10-19 ScarletsThe visitors bounced back to see Nathan Moffat bridge the gap with a try in the 44th minute before Ethan McVicker put the Scots further in front with the team’s fourth try 10 minutes later.To seal the deal, Moffat scored his second of the game – which he also converted – to strengthen and secure his side’s lead.FT: Scotland U16 Reds 27-19 Scarlets
