Shawlands and Biggar both eager to win the double

Shawlands Academy and Biggar High School will be both hoping to achieve a unique double at tomorrow’s Girls’ Schools Cup Final.

The finals, which will be held at Scotstoun as part of the celebration of women and girls’ day, will take place on the main pitch ahead of the Scotland Women match against Canada.

Reigning U15 champions Shawlands Academy have an opportunity to defend their title after putting in commanding performances in the quarter and semi-finals. Shawlands will face Biggar High School after Falkirk High School gave them a tough match in the quarter finals. The Borders team just managed to win 39-36. In the semi-finals, Biggar faced Eastwood High School, who they defeated 50-14 to make it through to the final.

Reflecting on the occasion, Robbie Renwick Head Coach from Shawlands Academy said: “All the girls are really excited to play at Scotstoun in the final. We have a mix of girls who have been here before and for some girls it’s their first time, so it should be a great occasion for them. The cup has been a great experience so far and we have had some enjoyable road trips and matches against Oban and the Gruntly Girls.”

Shawlands Academy, who have dominated the U15 Cup finals over the last few years, are now making an appearance in the U18 finals as well. Their place in the final was confirmed after they had a fantastic 42-0 win over Balfron High School in the semi-finals.

The 2017 U18 runners-up Biggar High School will have another chance to claim the trophy after making this year’s final. The 2016 Champions are going into the finals having scored 113 unanswered points in the earlier rounds of the Cup.

Biggar High School Head Coach Megan Walker said: “I am very proud of all the hard work, dedication and commitment the girls have shown to get here today. Both Biggar teams have been outstanding in their performances throughout every game and I’m sure this will continue today. We are all really looking forward to both matches against strong Shawlands sides.”
