Teams gear up for first weekend of FOSROC Super6

A ‘new era’ of top-tier of domestic rugby gets underway in Scotland this weekend as teams prepare for the inaugural season of FOSROC Super6.

The new tournament will see franchise sides Ayrshire Bulls, Boroughmuir Bears, Heriot’s Rugby, Southern Knights, Stirling County and Watsonians Rugby go head-to-head in the first weekend of fixtures.

Kicking off the competition this Friday night are Boroughmuir Bears, who host Stirling County at Meggetland under floodlights (kick-off 7.30pm), before Watsonians travel to the Greenyards to face Southern Knights on their new 3G surface the following day (kick-off 3pm).

The final game of the weekend between the Ayrshire Bulls and Heriot’s Rugby takes place on Sunday at Millbrae (kick-off 2pm) and will be shown live on Scottish Rugby’s YouTube channel and the BBC website.

Scottish Rugby Chief Executive Mark Dodson, said: ““This is an exciting new era for the sport in Scotland, as we look to close the gap between our domestic and full-time professional games.

“I’d like to thank the six teams who have embraced this opportunity to start something special.”

“To have six squads of part-time professional players set-up and ready to compete in a compact and competitive environment has taken a lot of work from a lot of people, so to finally be at this point is really exciting.

“It’s also fantastic to have the top tier of Scottish domestic rugby back on the BBC and on our own channels week in, week out, as we look to grow the visibility of the game in this country and wider afield all year round.

FOSROC Super6 Tournament Director, Stephen Gemmell, said: “It’s great to see so much excitement after months of hard work by the teams, who have really bought into this new era of rugby.

“We’re all really looking forward to getting the rugby underway now with three games across this weekend, culminating in our first FOSROC Super6 broadcast fixture on Sunday.

“The make-up of each squad looks exciting on paper and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they adapt as a team and perform on the pitch.”

One FOSROC Super6 match will be broadcast live on scottishrugby.org and the BBC website every weekend and will be accompanied by a weekly highlights programme.
