Tennent’s Premiership round-up
Both the Men's and Women's Tennent's Premiership competitions enjoyed another round of action this past weekend.
Tennent’s Premiership (Men’s)
The Tennent’s Premiership rolled onto round three this this past weekend, with five more entertaining matches completing a fixture list that sees Marr and Currie Chieftains top the standings.
The Troon club racked up eight tries in their away win at GHA, with Gregor Paxton, Gregor Ness and Scott Bickerstaff all helping themselves to braces against a spirited home side that scored four tries themselves for a bonus point. Marr Head Coach, Craig Redpath, reacted to a third straight win by saying: “It’s another bonus point win, and we played some good stuff. We maybe gave away three of their tries, but fair play to GHA for taking them. All in all though, we’re very happy and it was a much better performance from last time out.”
Fellow pacesetters Currie Chieftains also grabbed a bonus point in their home victory over Hawick at Malleny Park, extending an 18-point interval lead to run out 40-15 winners. After watching his side notch six tries, all through different scorers, Head Coach Mark Cairns reflected: “I was really pleased with the effort of the boys in between the big events of the game; speed in getting up off the ground in defence and quickly getting into position in attack gave us the ability to execute much better than we have in the last few weeks.”
Hawick boss George Graham lamented: “I don’t think we played to our strengths today and every one of our players accepted that the performance today was not good enough. Back to the drawing board, we have Selkirk in a border derby next week and we must target that game.”
Elsewhere, Jed-Forest snatched a first win of the campaign in defeating Glasgow Hawks 38-33 in an 11-try thriller at Riverside Park, whilst Edinburgh Accies raced to a 61-14 triumph at Musselburgh, a result that prompted coach Iain Berthinussen to say: “We just want to keep playing and having fun. A key thing for these boys is that maybe last year that wasn’t the case. We’ve already had as many wins as last season and just want to continue having fun.”
Finally, Aberdeen Grammar got off to a flying start at Philiphaugh to earn a half-time lead that hosts Selkirk could not claw back, despite their best efforts. Home Head Coach Scott Wight said of his side’s 24-44 reverse: “We’re really disappointed with the game, we just gave Aberdeen far too much time on ball and didn’t bring any energy that we had spoken about during the week. One positive was scoring a bonus point try when we were 32-5 down a half-time, which showed great character.”

Tennent’s Premiership (Women’s)
In the Tennent’s Women’s Premiership, Watsonians won the battle at the top of the table, beating Hillhead Jordanhill 38-17 in an entertaining match at Myreside. Despite keeping the hosts scoreless after the interval, the visitors could not quite claw their way back into proceedings, although Head Coach Aird Jardine was keen to highlight the positives, saying: “It really was a game of two halves.
In the first half, there was some individual and team errors in defence leading to us chasing the game. The players worked incredibly hard in defence in the second half and as a result didn’t concede a single point in the second half. Watsonians, as always, were very physical, and we matched them brilliantly leading to our third try (the only score of the half.)
We are disappointed with the full-time result from today but as a whole very pleased and proud of the players’ defence efforts in the second half of the game.”
In the other two Tennent’s Women’s Premiership fixtures, Ayr beat Cartha Queen’s Park 41-17 to break their duck for the season, and Corstorphine grabbed a 38-24 away win at Stirling County to move up to third in the top flight.
