Women’s Sport Week 2017: Ellie Sutherland
Scottish Rugby is supporting Women’s Sport Week 2017 to inspire more women and girls to give rugby a go. A range of women are sharing their rugby journey on scottishrugby.org this week to encourage beginners or those who want to return to the sport to #BeTheBestYou.Name: Ellie SutherlandAge: 25Club: Cartha Queen’s Park – PlayerTell us about your rugby journey…I played almost every other sport imaginable before joining rugby. After much persuasion from a friend I decided to give rugby a go and joined a girls’ team when I was about 15. From the first training session I loved it and have pretty much played ever since, regardless of where I have moved to. Rugby has given me my closest friends and I’ve got a long way yet before I’ll be hanging up my boots. What do you love about rugby?I love the team bond you get with rugby, while still keeping that true competitive nature. I love that I get to travel all over the country for games, tournaments and festivals. I also like the physical aspects, such as tackling. What would you say to women and girls thinking about trying rugby?I would say to definitely give it a try, regardless of size or previous ability. I was terrified before I started but then I was hooked. You’ll also meet the best bunch of girls around and you’re guaranteed to spend a big part of a training sessions laughing.Interested in giving rugby a go? With more women’s and girls’ teams being established in Scotland every year, it’s an ideal time to try rugby at a club near you at one of our #BeTheBestYou taster sessions this summer. They’re free, fun and for anyone who wants to try rugby for the first time or perhaps return to the sport after a break. Go to scottishrugby.org/bestyou to sign up now!
