Scotland Sevens Go For Six

Scotland’s 7s squad look like meeting its toughest matches yet as the draw for the sixth leg of this season’s IRB Sevens World Series is announced. The Australian event takes place in Adelaide on the weekend of 5/6 April and the Scots will be looking to gain momentum as the Series builds towards the final tournament in Edinburgh on 31 May/1 June. Not only has Scotland been pooled with reigning Series champions New Zealand, but they’re also scheuled to face Argentina and the Cook Islands on Day One. As Scotland Sevens’ Coach Stephen Gemmell commented, “We have to be honest with ourselves and admit that it is a very difficult pool to be in but there are no easy pools here and that’s a marker of how good the Adelaide tournament is in terms of the quality of teams taking part…we need to perform like a top-eight team and get into the Cup competition on day two.” The Scotland squad has already met New Zealand in the San Diego leg and has encountered Argentina on more than one occasion. Meanwhile the Cook Islands performed one of the biggest giant-killing acts of the Series so far when the side beat England in Wellington. “They are very physical in the tackle so we will prepare like we did for Tonga, said Stephen Gemmell of the South Sea side, because they are both big powerful sides that can play some great sevens rugby.” Scotland 7s’ Pool A fixtures on day one of the IRB Adelaide Sevens:Scotland 7s v Cook Islands, kick-off 12:15pmScotland 7s v Argentina, kick-off 3:21pm New Zealand v Scotland 7s, kick-off 7:26pm
