A second win!

It was close at half time, but a controlled second half performance from Scotland U20 gives them a second win of the trophy!

Thanks for following the updates. We’ll be back on Tuesday with our next game against Uruguay U20.

71

Another steal for Smith!

Scotland fairly dominant at this stage of the game.

USA attacking on the halfway line, but Jonny Smith steps in and wins another jackal penalty.

Afshar will boot this into the 22 on the left side.

57

YIPPEE KI-YAY FOR MCLEAN!

A try for Andy McLean!

The Aberdonian has been fantastic so far, and after a penalty is kicked into touch five metres out on the right, Scotland work infield for a phase before going back down the right.

McLean receives the pass from Afshar and is far too quick for the defence.

78

Defence tested

A first lengthy test of Scotland’s defence in this half, and it stands up excellently.

After several phases, a loose pass goes into touch on the 22 and Scotland have a chance to clear.

47

Ball robbed by Deans!

The kick off collection is scrappy and USA grab it, but Robbie Deans latches onto the ball at the ruck and wins the penalty turnover!

65

Yule stopped by the whistle

Excellent hands from Afshar and McLean to put Kerr Yule through!

The centre is brought down, but gets up and thunders for the line – only for the referee to inform him he had been tackled and was not allowed to get back to his feet.

USA will exit from deep in their own 22.

48

Pressure relieved

Scotland kick the penalty to USA’s 22, but then give away a penalty themselves in the first phase and USA exit.

67

CORE BLIMEY!

Corey Tait said in a press conference this week that he spotted a lion during a game drive with the team in Kenya, describing it as “pretty cool”.

Well, he was on the prowl for a try at the back of a driving maul, and he got it!

The conversion from Afshar was “pretty cool” as well.

53

…AND ANOTHER TRY!

A brace for Afshar!

He spotted another gap at the side of a ruck following the maul, and once more he took full advantage.

The conversion takes his personal haul up to 18 points for the day.

60

Halfway scrum

Scotland kick through, but it goes all the way over the dead ball line and out.

It was kicked on the halfway line, so USA will put in to the scrum from there.

43

Penalty kicked to corner

A lineout on halfway for Scotland is very fruitful, as a long lineout drive leads to a penalty.

McLean tries a crossfield kick for Douglas which goes out, but it’s back for the penalty and Scotland will throw in at the lineout five metres out.

52

Another pen to the corner

Ben Afshar is taken out at the back of the ruck, and the referee awards a penalty on the left side.

It’s kicked to the corner once more…

HT

Half time

It’s been hard work, but Scotland lead at the interval!

45

AFSHAR!

A third try!

The lineout drive gets Scotland close, and Afshar spots a gap at the side of the following ruck.

The scrum half squirms through, sidesteps the last defender and dives over.

He’s also converted his own try for good measure.

40

FINDLAY FINDS THE TRY!

At last! Scotland’s forwards work their way to the line, and Findlay Thomson’s thunderous inside line gets him over.

Afshar’s kick from near the posts means we’ll lead at the break!

41

Restart

USA get us back underway.

COME ON SCOTLAND!

37

Six-point game

An easy kick for USA.

HT

Ken-ya believe it?

Well, it looked likely Scotland might go in behind there.

But a last-gasp try from Findlay Thomson, combined with the earlier score from Finn Douglas, was enough to give the young Scots a one-point lead at half-time in Nairobi.

32

Unlucky again!

Again Jarvie is denied!

This time it’s Jake Parkinson who goes clear, and good hands from McLean a phase later puts Salmon one-on-one against the full back.

He opts to fire a pass out wide to Jarvie, but after several juggles the ball squirms loose and USA survive.

36

Another shot at goal for USA

Will Scotland be made to pay for their mistakes here? Two big chances to retake the lead, but USA come up the end and win a penalty in front of the posts for Scotland coming in at the side.

39

Scrum penalty!

USA drop the kick off forward, and a big shove from Scotland wins the penalty!

It’s kicked to the right corner.

27

It’s good

USA lead by three.

19

Quick response

USA look quick when they found space, and after an initial break is thwarted by McLean, they find space on the right and level the scores.

30

Try disallowed

Some excellent play from Scotland, as McLean flies into the 22 with a fantastic break.

A few phases later, the fly-half pokes through a lovely grubber which Logan Jarvie finishes in the right corner.

But Liam McConnell is judged to have cleaned out illegally at a ruck in the build up, and after initially awarding the try the referee gives USA the penalty instead.

27

Kick at goal

Another penalty for USA, this time for not rolling.

This one will be kicked at goal from the 22 metre line, just right of the posts.

25

USA coming forward

After Scotland lose control of another lineout in USA territory, their opponents come forward and Scotland are penalised for offside.

The penalty is kicked to touch inside Scotland’s 22.

16

Great steal Jonny Smith

Scotland are defending on their own halfway line, but Jonny Smith wraps up the USA scrum half and brings him down.

The openside flanker then releases the man and targets the ball, and wins the penalty for holding on.

Scotland kick to just outside USA’s 22, on the left side.

8

USA on the counter

USA make two line breaks in quick succession, first on the right and then the left, but two excellent tackles from Dan King prevent a score for the side in navy blue.

USA kick a penalty on the 22 into touch on the right side, continuing their attack.

14

Break in play

Not had many stoppages in play so far, but we’ll have one now as Andy McLean goes down.

He looked to be tackled late there, but the referee waved play on.

It takes more than that to keep the former Robert Gordon’s College pupil down, and he’s back on his feet.

12:02

Kick off approaching

A solid rendition of Flower of Scotland from the Scottish faithful.

Dan King will kick us off.

18

Finn’s footwork for five points!

It’s a first try of the game, and it goes to Scotland!

A driving maul rumbles down the left, and on the short side Ben Afshar finds Finn Douglas, who steps around his opposite winger and dives over the line.

12

End to end

A knock on gives Scotland the ball back, and they duly break up the field and get a lineout of their own five metres out.

But it’s stolen, and it’s USA’s turn to exit.

1

Underway!

COME ON SCOTLAND!

2

First attack from Scotland

Scotland attack down the right before working their way over to the left.

It hasn’t worked out though, and USA get the penalty in their own 22.
