Scotland Women took on their English counterparts at Twickenham today, following the conclusion of the men’s game on the international pitch but were overwhelmed – 89-0 – by a highly experienced England pack whose fitness and physicality showed just why they are currently topping their Six Nations table. A good portion of the Calcutta Cup crowd made the decision to stay on and watch the women’s fixture while others arrived to take advantage of the free entry to the women’s game only. The Scots must now regroup and refocus their efforts on putting in a sterling performance against the Italians who visit Meggetland next Sunday 20 March (kick-off 3pm, admission free) in the last match of this Championship. The home side stamped their mark on proceedings within the first two minutes, with a try from Merchant, the score uncoverted. The restart saw the Scots move deep into the English 22 with a positive effort from the boot of Dalgliesh, however Matthews then added to the England tally six minutes later, the conversion again wide. Two further tries for the home side from Scarrett and Essex saw England increase their lead to 22-0 after 16 minutes. Scotland were putting in the try-saving tackles as England advanced again, pressure leading to more points as they crossed the line again just short of the half-hour mark, the try not given. Minutes later, however, Clark added another five points, the score converted by Mclean, swiftly followed by a try from Matthews. When Scotland did see the ball, they worked hard, however the opportunities were few and far between, though did feature some good clearance attempts from Martin. On the stroke of half time, however, a Fisher / Mclean combo saw England increase their lead to 41-0 as the sides broke off. Within the first minute of the second half, however, the crowd had a deja vue moment as Fisher and Mclean combined to add another seven points to the score, making it 48-0. Nine minutes later, Scarrett crossed for a score, followed by Clark, with replacement Maggie Alphonsi then adding her weight to the try count. Fresh legs gave Scotland a boost and the ooportunity of a penalty, which they chose to run. Good work, pressing England’s defensive line followed, the Scots making the most of the all too few chances they had with the ball. It was all England, however as their pace and physicality again came to the fore with a score from Mclean, swiftly followed by Alphonsi’s second. Replacement Waterman bagged her own brace in the final minutes to round off the final score. Despite England’s obvious experience, the Scots will be hugely disappointed to have suffered such a comprehensive defeat and must look to improve their pace and basic skills before meeting the Italians in less than seven days.
