With Halifax in Canada now out of the race, Glasgow’s competition for the right to host the Games is in the form of Nigerian capital Abuja. Scottish Rugby President Andy Irvine said: “Rugby Sevens is one of the core sports in Glasgow’s bid for the games so we are fully behind bringing the event to Scotland for the benefit of not only our own sport, but sport throughout the country. The infrastructure, jobs and kudos that an event of this calibre would bring to Scotland cannot be underestimated. Hosting the games is a fantastic opportunity to show millions of people across the world that Scotland is a modern, ambitions and dynamic nation, capable of staging such a prestigious international event.” Scotland head coach Frank Hadden added: “Rugby is one of five sports guaranteed to play a huge part in 2014 if the Scottish bid is successful and the benefits will be felt by everybody. I believe bringing the cream of the Commonwealth’s athletes to Glasgow in 2014 could have a huge impact on the youth of Scotland.” The final decision on the 2014 host city will be made on 9 November, 2007.
