A packed Burnbrae this afternoon (Sunday 13 February) saw Scotland Women take on their Welsh counterparts in the second RBS 6 Nations fixture of 2011.The fast-paced encounter ended in defeat for the home side (12-41) though Scotland Women head coach Karen Findlay saw improvement in various areas.She said:Our defence was much better in the first twenty minutes and in the closing 20 minutes of the second half, the players were particularly courageous and really dug deep. We suffered through silly penalties and persistent indiscipline, however, and that’s got to stop. Read the full match report, listen to Karen’s thoughts on the game, and Tracy Balmer’s comment on her debut Scotland try, below.Lindsay Wheeler on her way to the try line Listen to Karen Findlay’s throughts on the game here Listen to Tracy Balmer on her first try for Scotland here   After Scotland were piped on to the field and the visitors had elected to sing their own anthem, the match kicked off at a terrific pace.The first ten minutes saw all the pressure from the Scots, including a glorious penalty booted down deep into the Welsh half from full back Caroline Collie.Following infringements around a loose ball, however, the first penalty attempt at goal went to Wales, successfully taken by their full back, Aimee Young, from in front of the posts to put the visitors ahead 0-3 after 12 minutes.A loose Welsh ball was retireved by centre Lisa Martin, followed by a lineout steal from flanker Ruth Slaven. The Scots looked to be on the front foot until a technical infringement on grounding the ball led to a second penalty attempt for the Wels, again slotted successfully by Young.A frantic second period of the first half ensued with some solid defence work from the Scots, particularly wing Steph Johnston, whose relentless efforts thwarted the Welsh advance.Just after the 30-minute mark, however, Wales took their chance and Elen Evans crossed for the first of her three tries, the conversion from Young going wide to put the visitors ahead 0-11.Some good work by Johnston again, aided by lock Lindsay Wheeler kept the Welsh at bay, until they were awarded a penalty a few minutes out from half time, following a yellow card for scrum half Louise Dalgliesh.With Wales now 0-14 ahead, a break from Evans again saw her cross the line to increase the Welsh score to 0-19. A further converted try, from Rhian Bowden and Young had the visitors go in 0-26 ahead at the break. Half time: 0-26 There were three substitutions from Scotland at half time with Dickens, Muir and Brown being replaced respectively by Balmer, Murphy and Swan. The first score of the second half then went to Wales’ Charlotte Murray (47m) the try unconverted, to increase Wales’ lead to 0-31.There were a flurry of substitutions for Wales a few minutes later with Amy Day replaced by Laura Prosser and Elinor Snowsill by Caryl Thomas; Lowri Harries replaced Rhian Bowden following a knock a few minutes later. The Scots turned round their game in the second half, determined to avoid the basic mistakes that had been costing them the points but despite heroic attempts by Collie to down two attackers, Wales found the angle and Caryl James took the five points, the conversion attempt rebounding off the bar to make it 0-36 going into the final 20 minutes, Jenny Davies replaced by Caryl Thomas at 56 minutes. An injury to stand-off Tanya Griffiths saw her replaced by Lauren Harris a few minutes later and Scotland pressed towards the Welsh line. A yellow card was shown to Jamie Kift for persistent infringements by the Welsh and the Scots immediately took advantage of the reduction in Welsh numbers with a run for the line, Tracy Balmer getting her hand on the ball to claim her debut try and Scotland’s first points of the game. The score was converted by Collie (62m) to make it 7-36. Going into the final ten minutes of regular time, Charlotte Veale was replaced by Jemma Forsyth, making her Scotland debut and Katy Green was replaced by Vik Blakebrough. Fantastic break on the wing from Lauren Harris brought Scotland to within inches of the Welsh line and it was another yellow for Wales as Caryl James and Jamie Kift swapped places in the sin bin. Approaching what would appear to be the final whistle, the Scots powered towards the line with Wheeler crossing for Scotland’s second try, the conversion attempt from Collie just going wide.
