In a game where neither back line saw too much of the ball, it was the visitors who threw down the gauntlet and proved it will be hard to stop them doing the double this year. With a very strong team fielded, including some familiar faces, Royal High showed their intentions early on with some rumbling play up the park before scrum half Louise Dalgliesh dived over for a try from close range. Claire Ferguson converted to give the visitors an early lead. Wandies responded with a try of their own, some good ground made by the forwards resulting in quick ball which was spun through the hands to give Charlie an easy run in in the corner. Harleybucks narrowly missed the conversion. Royal High certainly enjoyed more possession, and their stronger and more experienced pack stuck to what worked by picking and driving close to the breakdown. This was frustrating for the home side, who would have liked to played a wider game, not least for the sake of the spectators on a glorious day that cried out for some champagne rugby. The home supporters had cause to cheer when captain Zulfi got on the end of a pass from Royal High player Veronique Fitzpatrique and was allowed to run half the length of the pitch unopposed to score under the sticks, Harley converted, leaving the score at 12-7. Royal High kept to their tight game plan, and were rewarded with two penalties, both of which were kicked successfully by Ferguson to make the half-time score 13-12. Tense indeed??¦ Despite some extremely brave defence by the Wanderers pack, the second half went mostly against the home team, with RHC dominating possession and territory and crashing over for 3 more tries, 2 for the Dagster (in negotiations to be appearing at a superleague near you) and one for winger Jenny Duff .1 try was converted to make the final score 30-12. The teams will meet again in the cup final, with the Wandies under strict instructions to eat more pies before then??¦
