Scottish Rugby has announced funding to help clubs improve access to on-site AEDs (automated external defibrillators). This aims to ensure all clubs have AEDs readily available and provides financial support for clubs needing to install, upgrade, or enhance their defibrillator access.
Scottish Rugby and the charity Hearts + Balls have partnered on a vital health campaign to expand defibrillator access and CPR training across rugby clubs in Scotland.
The initiative is being praised by a young Scottish cardiac arrest survivor, who owes his life to his rugby club team-mates and the pioneering fund-raising his club undertook to buy a defibrillator. For Hamish Bell, now aged 23, working for an offshore supply company in Aberdeen, the message is simple. “Let’s get behind Scottish Rugby and this amazing charity Hearts + Balls. Let’s support their initiative and allow for all rugby clubs in Scotland to have access to at least one defibrillator and the chance to learn CPR. It will prove a life-saver.”
Hearts + Balls has pledged up to £25,000 to support the campaign, which aligns with broader public health goals to increase community cardiac preparedness. You can read more about this campaign on the Scottish Rugby website.
AED Fund Summary
This fund will prioritise funding to Clubs for a new AED for those who do not have access to an AED on site, or only limited access.
Clubs who do not have access to an AED will be eligible for 100% funding for an AED and internal or external cabinet, depending on Clubs preference.
The fund will also prioritise Clubs who have an AED that is more than 10 years old, who may find batteries or parts difficult to source.
Depending on the volume of applications, the fund may also contribute with funding to clubs to augment existing AEDs in Clubs with consumables. Examples of consumables that would augment an AED are: external cabinets, replacement pads.
