History of the 1872 Cup
The first derby took place on 23 November 1872 when Glasgow District met Edinburgh District at Burnbank, home of Glasgow Academicals RFC.
The match – played by teams of 20-a-side – was won by an Edinburgh drop-goal to nil, giving the men from the capital the victory.
In the 2007/08 season, a new chapter in Scotland’s greatest rugby rivalry was written, as the 1872 Cup was born. Incorporated into the BKT United Rugby Championship schedule, the two teams go head-to-head in a festive double-header to determine national bragging rights and crucial league points – not to mention the destination of the 1872 Cup itself.
Glasgow Warriors are the current holders of the trophy, having defended their title in the 2023/24 campaign courtesy of a 36-29 aggregate victory across the two legs of the tie.
