U16 Academy activity wraps up for 2023/24 season with Gala festival

This season's FOSROC Academy activity came to a close for the U16s on Sunday, with two Edinburgh Rugby and two Glasgow Warriors teams taking on two teams from Newcastle Falcons U16.

Each side played three 30-minute games across Sunday afternoon on the grass and 4G pitches at Netherdale.

The four Scottish sides were picked from the four regional academies. Edinburgh Rugby were represented by the Edinburgh and Borders & East Lothian regions, while Glasgow Warriors were represented by Caledonia and Glasgow & the West.

Edinburgh played as Edinburgh Rugby Gunners and Edinburgh Rugby Reivers, and Glasgow played under Glasgow Warriors Whites and Glasgow Warriors Blues.

Head of Pathways John Fletcher said: “We need to play against different teams, teams that have a different sort of philosophy on the game. Falcons are similar to us to be perfectly honest, they want to keep the ball in hand and move the ball about, but certainly slightly different from us and it’s good for us to play against different players.

“These players will now have 4-6 weeks where they’re just doing stuff to keep them ticking over, and then we go back at it pretty hard in the summer.

“Lots of these guys will be involved in the U18 stuff, and we’ll also have some U17 activity in the summer.”
