Women’s Premiership returns | Tennent’s Leagues Preview
It’s time for the highly anticipated return of the Tennent’s Premiership for the Women’s game this weekend, with two local derbies in the east and west of the country included in the action.
The composition of participating teams has seen a slight change since the 2019 competition. Following the decision to accept the request from Ayr Rugby Women’s 1st XV to step down from the Premiership to National League Division 1, their place was offered and accepted by Heriot’s Blues Women who were the runner up in the Premiership Play Off in 2019.
The Blues will welcome the reining champions Watsonians to Goldenacre in their opening fixture, an exciting test for the Blues as they step into the competition for the first time.
Speaking to scottishrugby.org, Watsonians Club Captain, Caitlin Abernethy shared her pre-match thoughts, saying: “The whole squad is extremely excited about returning to competitive rugby after such a long time out. We have all been giving absolutely everything during pre-season. We are really excited to try and execute everything we have been working on.
“The long run up to the season starting has given us the opportunity to go back to the basics and build the team up. We have had great numbers down at training throughout the summer which has really aided preparation.
“As Heriots are new to the Premiership we are excited for the challenge of playing a new and growing team. We played a couple of pre-season friendlies against them so they are not a totally unknown quantity, but we are relishing the prospect of playing our first competitive fixture against them on Sunday.”
Elsewhere, Stirling County will make their way to Union Park to face Corstorphine Cougars, and Cartha Queen’s Park will host local rivals Hillhead Jordanhill.
All games are set to kick off at 2pm on Sunday 12 September.
Video highlights from the Women’s Premiership will be available on Scottish Rugby’s website and social media channels next week.
Tennent’s Premiership & National 1 (Men’s)
After a staggered start, we now look ahead to Round 2 of the Tennent’s Premiership and National 1 league in the Men’s game.
This weekend Currie Chieftains will face Marr who secured a solid win in last week’s fixture against Glasgow Hawks.
The Hawks will look to rebuild this week with a trip to the north of the country, playing away to Aberdeen Grammar.
Borders clubs Hawick and Selkirk will take on GHA and Musselburgh respectively.
Both looking to record their first win in their first fixture of the season after postponements last weekend, Edinburgh Accies and Jed-Forest will go head-to-head at Raeburn Place.
Elsewhere in the Men’s leagues, National 1 opening round winners Ayr and Gala will take to the field at Millbrae, whilst Heriot’s Blues will host Cartha Queen’s Park as they both look to record their first win of the season.
Highland will travel to Kelso, and Biggar will make their way to Stirling to face Stirling Wolves.
