Dubai Sets Tone As Cusiter Backs Edinburgh 7s

Scotland scrum-half Chris Cusiter has given a ringing endorsement to the eagerly anticipated rugby party of the summer – the Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s – having taken time to visit the IRB event in Dubai in December.British and Irish Lions star Cusiter, who announced last week that he has signed for Perpignan, travelled to the United Arab Emirates for a holiday and to watch older brother Calum compete in the IRB Dubai Sevens’ club event, which takes place alongside the international sevens competition. Calum went on to make his debut for Scotland 7s shortly after at the IRB New Zealand event in FebruaryThe Dubai tournament was the first leg of the eight stage IRB Sevens World Series that culminates for the first time in Scotland this year. The Edinburgh 7s take place at Murrayfield Stadium on 2 and 3 June and it is expected to be quite a party.   Cusiter looked back on his trip to Dubai saying: “It was fantastic. It was the first IRB Sevens tournament I’ve been to and the atmosphere was great. Obviously a lot of people go just for a good time and it’s not essential that you’re particularly interested in rugby.  “It’s very different to the XVs game as it’s really open and there are a lot of tries. The whole thing is just a big party and a great couple of days out for everyone,” he added.   Having played in front of crowds at Murrayfield since his home Scotland debut against England in 2004, Cusiter knows only too well what the atmosphere is like in and around the home of Scottish rugby on match day. There won’t just be high class international rugby on the pitch but a real party in the stands too.   He said: “It’ll be really good to see this here in Edinburgh. The rugby will be exciting but you don’t have to watch it all. You can come in and out of the stadium and there’ll be plenty to do away from the international pitch. “Sevens events are great for socialising. There’ll be a lot of hospitality at Murrayfield on the day with plenty of scope for meeting up with friends. The rugby is obviously a big part of it but it’s not the be all and end all of the weekend,” he added.  With tickets at only£10 for adults for one day or just£15 for both days (including FREE concessions on all pre-booked tickets) this is a weekend not to be missed and Cusiter wants everyone to get involved.   He said: “I hope so, people really need to get behind it. When you look at the other countries who hold these events and the impact they have then there’s no reason why Scotland can’t start to have the same. Even in countries like Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore, that aren’t traditional rugby hotbeds, they are hugely popular events.”
