Despite narrowly losing their opening Pool match against Samoa on Friday night, head coach Robertson says the Scotland squad are in an upbeat mood ahead of the showdown with the much-fancied Springboks. Robertson said: South Africa are going to provide us with a massive challenge because they are right up there as one of the favourites to win the championship. They are an outstanding side; there is no doubt about that. However our guys are looking forward to the challenge and it is a great opportunity for them. It is not that often Scottish players get a chance to play against South Africa. From that point of view, the players view this game as being a milestone and they are excited about it. The players are all completely committed to going out there and giving it a real crack. Only four players who featured in the starting line-up against Samoa have retained their places for the match against South Africa and Robertson says the big reshuffle is all part of Scotland’s tournament strategy. He added: One of our aims was to play everybody over the first couple of games. That was our strategy for the tournament. After this match, all of our players will have had a considerable amount of game-time which enables us to look at our options for the third game against the USA. Captain Lewis Calder returns to the starting line-up at openside flanker as part of a back row containing Steven Burton and Jonny Baird. Robertson believes the Newcastle Falcons forward will lead the team by example and that there will be a fascinating back row battle on show against the Springboks. He added: Lewis is very experienced now in terms of leading the side and he is looking forward to leading the team against one of the top sides in the world. It is a great challenge for him and he is capable of doing the job very well. Jonny Baird is a very skilful player and it is a great opportunity for him. Steve Burton also played very well against Samoa, so this is an opportunity for that back-row to front up against a very physical challenge.
