While RBS Premier Division A took a break this weekend, there was plenty of action elsewhere in the women’s leagues, with the players in Division C kicking off their season on Sunday (30 September).Dundee side Morgan hosted Broughton in a keenly-fought contest which ended in victory (17-34) for the visitors. With team regular Anna McFarlane otherwise occupied at a Scotland Women training camp at Murrayfield, the Edinburgh-based side gave debuts to Roz Galloway and Nuala Deans, a former Scotland internationalist at cricket and football! It was Broughton who put the first scores on the board, their forwards taking the game to the hosts with recycled ball picked up on the hoof by stand-off Laura Kinghorn who offloaded to flanker Megan Greer, who crossed for the first try.Player / secretary Billie Birt said: “There were also some great runs from centre Nuala Deans who was fearless in receiving the ball and dancing around four opposition players to score her first try in her debut match for Broughton. There were also some great runs from centre Nuala Deans who was fearless in receiving the ball and dancing around four opposition players to score her first try in her debut match for Broughton. With Kinghorn crossing to make it three tries in the opening 25 minutes, Broughton opened up a 0-19 lead. Then, on the stroke of half-time, Morgan got back in the game when their flanker escaped the clutches of three Broughton defenders to go in for a well worked try.Kinghorn replied early in the second half with a bonus-point score swiftly followed by a second try from Morgan.Added Birt: “Our forwards were excellent, working in pods at receiving the ball off Laura Kinghorn and crashing it up the field. Lock Jennifer Harris was reaching new heights as the Broughton props have progressed to lift from the knees in the lineouts and managed to steal a few of the oppositions lineouts.Forward Joanne Laing and fullback Ivana McConnell added their names to the try list with a conversion from Kinghorn. Morgan grabbed a consolation score in the dying moments of the game, the flanker completing her hat-trick, to make the final score 17-34.The other game in RBS Women’s Premier Division C saw Edinburgh University defeat Glasgow University 27-0. Just one game took place in Division B – the Cartha Queen’s Park v Aberdeenshire Quines game was postposed – as Stirling County overcame Dundee University 71-7.Next weekend (Sunday 7 October), the RBS Women’s National League joins the fray, with Oban Lorne v Stewartry, Kirkcaldy v Grangemouth and Lismore v RDVC. In Premier C Broughton host Edinburgh University and Morgan visit Glasgow University.
