Mixed results for Scotland 7s in Lyon
Scotland 7s had a mixed bag of results today in Lyon at the FIRA-AER Grand Prix Series, winning two of their fixtures and losing two.The Scots lost their first two matches against France, 31-5 and Germany, 21-19, before beating Portugal, 12-10 and then Italy, 14-5. The results were good enough to help the side end day one second in Group B.One more match will take place in the group stages tomorrow morning, against Russia at 10.08am (BST).Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “Today has been disappointing overall. We were very poor in our first two games and we just didn’t show commitment. That is most frustrating when players are fighting to get into a Rugby World Cup 7s squad.”You can’t have disappointments before you react, we have to address that, because we did bounce back against Portugal and Italy, but only when our backs were against the wall. If you don’t show commitment anyone will beat you.”Now we need to do our recovery and front up to a very physical team in Russia. We must be ready and show what it means to play for each other and Scotland 7s.”We will finalise the Rugby World Cup 7s squad next week so I want players to go out and put their hands up for selection.”Following today’s matches James Fleming will have no further involvement in the tournament after sustaining a knee injury. Scotland 7s will play three games tomorrow. If they beat Russia they will finish in the top four and progress to a Cup semi-final. If they win that match they will move into the final. However, if they lose that game they will play a third place play-off. If they lose to Russia the format will be the same but a tier lower.Lyon FIRA-AER Grand Prix SeriesDay one resultsScotland 5-31 FranceTry: Nyle GodsmarkScotland 19-21 GermanyTries: Andrew Turnbull, Lewis Young and Chris DeanConversions: Jim Thompson (2)Scotland 12-10 PortugalTries: Nyle Godsmark and Andrew TurnbullConversion: Jim ThompsonScotland 14-5 ItalyTries: Mark Robertson and James JohnstoneConversions: Jim Thompson (2)Scotland 7s to play in FIRA-AER tournament on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2013 at the Matmut Stadium in Lyon: Joseva Nayacavou (Royal Scots), Chris Dean (Scotland 7s EDP), Michael Maltman (Scotland 7s), Nyle Godsmark (Edinburgh Accies), Callum Reid (Edinburgh Accies), Lewis Young (Scotland 7s), Alex Glashan (Scotland 7s EDP), Jim Thompson (London Scottish), Mark Robertson (Scotland 7s), Andrew Turnbull (captain) (Scotland 7s), James Fleming (Scotland 7s) and James Johnstone (Scotland 7s).
