Scotland 7s to face Kenya in Hong Kong Bowl competition
Scotland 7s came within inches of beating Samoa, in their final Pool D match in Hong Kong this afternoon, but were overcome, 19-14. The side will now face Kenya in the Bowl quarter-finals at 2am tomorrow morning (30 March, UK time).Trailing 19-7 with two minutes to go, the Scots turned over the Samoan’s, won a penalty and had to make 40 yards to the line. They worked their way patiently forward, however, a knock-on a metre from the whitewash saw the hooter blow and their hopes of a place in the Cup quarter-finals lost.Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “It’s massively frustrating, we were ahead at half-time, but became passive in the second period. We were gifted an opportunity, having brought ourselves back within five points and with time still left on the clock, but we made some wrong decision. Too little too late.”Scoring for the Scots were Scott Riddell and Andrew Turnbull.Scotland 7s squad to compete in the Hong Kong 7s (29-30 March): Scott Riddell, Finlay Gillies (Glasgow Warriors), Mark Robertson, Lee Jones (Glasgow Warriors), Colin Gregor, Chris Dean, Andrew Turnbull, Michael Maltman, Mark Bennett (Glasgow Warriors), Scott Wight (Glasgow Warriors), James Johnstone and James Eddie (Glasgow Warriors).Hong Kong 7s day oneScotland 0-33 New ZealandStarting team: Scott Riddell, Mark Robertson, Michael Maltman, Lee Jones, Colin Gregor, Mark Bennett and James Johnstone.Replacements: Chris Dean, James Eddie (both 9mins), Andrew Turnbull (10mins), Finlay Gillies and Scott Wight (both 12mins).Hong Kong 7s day two Scotland 15-10 USATries: Mark Bennett (2) and James JohnstoneStarting team: Scott Riddell, Lee Jones, Colin Gregor, Chris Dean, Mark Bennett, James Johnstone and James Eddie.Replacements: Mark Robertson (8mins), Finlay Gillies, Andrew Turnbull, Michael Maltman and Scott Wight (not used).
