Home of rugby sevens welcomes Scotland squad
13 Oct 2016
Melrose Rugby Club will welcome the Scotland 7s squad to The Greenyards on Saturday for a family lunch event, as part of the club’s engagement with the local community and the development of the 1883 Legacy project. The squad, who made history with their first ever HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series win at the London 7s back in May, will travel to the home of rugby sevens for a mini coaching clinic with the club’s youth section ahead of the BT Premiership clash between Melrose and Heriot’s (kick-off 3pm).Among the Cup winning visitors, is Melrose’s own, Mark Robertson, who picked up a silver medal at Rio 2016 as part of the Team GB rugby sevens squad. For the 1883 Legacy project, Melrose took on the challenge of addressing the facilities at The Greenyards earlier this year, ensuring that the club’s rich heritage and place in World Rugby sevens history is retained as a legacy for future generations.Melrose Rugby Club President, Trevor Jackson, said: “Melrose Rugby is very proud to see the growth of sevens as a global sport.”It served as my introduction to the game of rugby through the Crichton Cup and to see players from the club on the world stage performing so well and knowing that the game started here is very special. We are looking to use the legacy to benefit the whole community of Melrose with our proposals to redevelop The Greenyards, and also give the sport of sevens a fitting home where it all began in 1883.”We hope the world of rugby agrees with us and helps to maintain our position in rugby history, not just for us but for the entire region.”Parents are invited to get involved in activities throughout the day and there will also be a race night in the evening from 7.30pm. Face painting and bouncy castles are provided for younger visitors to the club.Family Lunch with the Scotland 7s squad, The Greenyards (from 12.30pm)For ticket information, please contact Melrose Rugby ClubT: 01896 822993 E: [email protected]
