Beattie names squad for Rugby World Cup Sevens

5 Sep 2022

Head coach Ciaran Beattie has named his Scotland squad for the upcoming Rugby World Cup Sevens in South Africa, to be held at Cape Town Stadium, 9-11 September.

Jamie Farndale continues captaincy duties at what will be his second Rugby World Cup Sevens after featuring in 2018, during which he scored an extra time, length-of-the-pitch winner against France as Scotland recorded a seventh-place finish in San Francisco.

The other player to hold previous Rugby World Cup Sevens experience is Harvey Elms, who was also part of the 2018 squad.

The remainder of Beattie’s 12-strong group contains a number of players who featured in Los Angeles in the World Rugby Sevens Series finale at the end of August, with Kaleem Barreto, Matt Davidson, Lee Jones, Femi Sofolarin, Paddy Kelly, Callum Young, Finn Callaghan and Reiss Cullen selected.

With injury having ruled out the likes of Ross McCann, Jordan Edmunds, Alec Coombes, Grant Hughes and Robbie Fergusson unavailable as his partner expects their second child, Beattie has named debutant Aaron Purewal and Freddie Owsley (Edinburgh Rugby, who featured in Toulouse and London) to complete his squad.

Scotland play Jamaica in the Pre-Round of 16 on Friday 9 September at 8.51am (BST), with all further matches over the course of the weekend determined by results in the knock-out format used at a Rugby World Cup Sevens. The event is being broadcast in the UK, live on ITV.

Head coach Beattie said: “This is one of the landmark events in the global sevens calendar and we are focussed on making a big impression. It’s important that we end the sevens season well and the players are intent on delivering their best performance in a Scotland shirt.”
