Melrose and Ayr go head-to-head in the BT Premiership final this Saturday (7 April, kick-off 3pm) as Scotland’s top club teams aim to claim the league title at the Greenyards.

Melrose finished top of the BT Premiership table for the second year in a row, nine points clear of second place Currie Chieftains and 12 points clear of fellow finalists Ayr.

In last year’s final they faced the same opposition and the west coast side took the spoils, winning 8-12 away from home, but the Borders outfit looked nigh-on unstoppable when they hit their stride this season.

They recorded 12 consecutive bonus point wins in their opening BT Premiership games and recorded only three defeats in 19 league games against Hawick, Currie and Saturday’s opposition, Ayr.

It was the defending champions who were first to take points from them in their first match of the new year when a 20-12 score-line denied Melrose even a losing bonus point.

The Greenyards club followed that game with another loss against second-placed Currie Chieftains but only one more defeat would come in the form of neighbours Hawick in the final round.

Since then, however, Rob Chrystie’s side secured a convincing victory over Watsonians in their play-off semi-final to book their place in this year’s final, winning 37-8.

Melrose were last crowned BT Premiership champions at the end of the 2013/14 season and are still on for a league-cup double with a ‘Silver Saturday’ (28 April) clash against Stirling County rounding of their season at BT Murrayfield in the BT Cup Final.
