Glasgow and the West claim victory in FOSROC 4s

15 Nov 2019

There were tries aplenty at Oriam on Wednesday as a number of players from across Scotland showcased their talents in the U19 FOSROC 4s.

The tournament was contested by Caledonia, Edinburgh, Glasgow & The West and the Borders & East Lothian, with six fixtures taking place throughout the day.

Glasgow & the West displayed their dominance in the opening match against the Borders & East Lothian and remained unbeaten during the event.

The side’s attacking flair saw them score a total of 18 tries throughout the day, which helped them secure the FOSROC 4s silverware.

The Borders & East Lothian were able to display more well-rounded performances against Caledonia and Edinburgh, however they were pipped to the post in both fixtures.

Edinburgh only lost one fixture following a narrow defeat against eventual winners Glasgow & the West, while Caledonia were able to take the spoils against The Borders & East Lothian.

The premise for the FOSROC 4s is to provide the opportunity for young home-based players to demonstrate their rugby skills in a fast-paced environment.

The format and law adaptations are designed to support Scottish Rugby’s Technical Blueprint, with the objectives of increasing ball in play time, maintaining speed and intensity, developing on-field decision making, promoting playing and decision making under pressure.

Grant McKelvey, Scottish Rugby’s Performance Projects & Talent ID Manager, said: “From the opening rounds of fixtures it was obvious that the teams were here to perform and there was some exceptional rugby on show.

“There was 40 tries scored in the six games played which is an increase from 31 last season, with most of the games remaining competitive going into the last few minutes.

“Scotland U20 Coaches Sean Lineen and Shade Munro were both in attendance to oversee the players who have been selected in the Scotland U19 extended training squad, along with a few others who have potentially staked a claim for further inclusions in the future.”
