It was quite the weekend for Edinburgh’s Darcy Graham as the 20-year-old was named in the Dubai 7s team of the tournament.
After touching down eight times en-route to the Scots fifth place semi-final exit, the winger topped the tournament’s scoring charts and grabbed plaudits from coaches and former-players alike.
“The whole weekend was a fantastic,” said Graham, who was making his Dubai 7s debut. “It was definitely up there with one of my favourite rugby experiences and I couldn’t have asked to be playing with a better group of boys.
“Having just returned from an injury, it was obviously a tough couple of days on my body, but it was a great feeling to just be back playing after such a long time out. Sevens is such an intense game, both in attack and defence, so I really feel like I’ve come out of the other end a better player all-round.”
Graham, who was named in the Scotland 7s squad whilst in South Africa last month, was a constant threat throughout the opening tournament of this season’s World Series and showcased some of the attacking skills which saw the former-Hawick star rise to prominence on the Kings of the Sevens circuit.
On day one, Graham found the scoresheet twice against France in a 24-14 victory for John Dalziel’s squad, before scoring yet another brace against Spain in the Scots’ second victory in as many games.
Graham’s try-scoring form didn’t decelerate as Scotland reached the knockout stages of the tournament. Although John Dalziel’s side eventually lost 35-24 to Olympic Champions Fiji in the Cup quarter-finals, Graham’s two solo first-half tries kept the Scots in the contest. The 20-year-old found himself on the scoresheet yet again in the fifth-place semi-final defeat to Samoa.
