REPORT: Scotland Women 7s triumph in Amsterdam

Scotland Women 7s began their summer campaign in earnest at the weekend, winning the Amsterdam 7s tournament.

The team took eight victories across the two days to lift the silverware, in a strong performance that bodes well for the forthcoming Rugby Europe Grand Prix.

Amsterdam 7s Day One

Scotland 24 – 12 Comite Cote d’Argent

Scotland’s opening game against the French side resulted in solid points on the board, with two tries apiece from Hannah Smith and Liz Musgrove and two conversions from Helen Nelson.

Scotland 70 – 0 HRC Xtreme

Scotland had the upper hand throughout the match against the Netherlands’ HRC Xtreme, with ten tries scored. The players who crossed the whitewash were Louise McMillan, Abi Evans, Evie Gallagher, Lauren Harris, Eilidh Sinclair (1 try, 1 conversion), Liz Musgrove (2), Jenny Maxwell, Chloe Rollie (1 try, 6 conversions) with Helen Nelson adding the extras on three occasions.

Scotland 47 – 0 Dambusters

The Scots continued to dominate the opposition in their final fixture of the day against Dambusters, who draw their players from clubs across the UK. The points scorers were Louise McMillan, Abi Evans, Eilidh Sinclair, Hannah Chrisp, Helen Nelson (1 try, 5 conversions) and Chloe Rollie (2 tries, 1 conversion).

Amsterdam 7s Day Two

Scotland 45 – 0 Paarse Rebellen

Scotland’s dominance continued in their opening match on day two, with the points coming from Louise McMillan, Evie Gallagher, Hannah Smith, Hannah Chrisp, Liz Musgrove, Jenny Maxwell, Chloe Rollie (1 try, 3 conversions) and Helen Nelson (2 conversions).

Scotland 33 – 0 Mo Sistas

Scotland maintained their form against Mo Sisters, a team that includes former England and Netherlands internationalists. Hannah Smith, Chloe Rollie and Lisa Martin crossed the whitewash, with Helen Nelson adding the extras.

Quarter-final

Scotland 41 – 12 Comite Cote d’Argent

Having made it into the knock-out stages, Scotland continued their winning streak against the French side. Points came from Abi Evans, Hannah Smith, Hannah Chrisp, Liz Musgrove (2), Helen Nelson (1 try, 2 conversions) and Lisa Martin (1 try, 1 conversion).

Semi-final

Scotland 28 – 14 Hong Kong

Scotland faced a closer encounter against a strong Hong Kong team, but kept their composure to secure a place in the final. The tries came from Abi Evans, Lauren Harris, Eilidh Sinclair, Chloe Rollie and Helen Nelson secured four conversions

Final

Scotland 26 – 5 Almaty

Scotland took victory in style against the Kazakhstan team to win the tournament, with a hat-trick of tries from Chloe Rollie backed up with a try from Lisa Martin and three conversions from Helen Nelson.

Having gained promotion back into the Grand Prix series by winning the Rugby Europe Trophy in 2017 the squad will play Grand Prix tournaments at Marcoussis, Paris on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June and Kazan on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September.
