Scotland Women 7s nominated for Scottish Women in Sport “Team of the Year” award

23 Nov 2021

The Scotland Women 7s squad have been nominated for the Scottish Women in Sport “Team of the Year” award.

The squad made history in June as they qualified for the next year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, following a formidable campaign at the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series in both Lisbon and Moscow.

It will be the first time that Team Scotland have competed in the women’s competition, since the women’s game was first introduced to the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast 2018.

Earlier this year in Lisbon – under the guidance of acting head coach Chris Laidlaw, as their regular head coach Scott Forrest was seconded to duty with the Team GB women’s sevens squad in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics – Scotland Women enjoyed victories over Belgium, Romania and the hosts to claim a fifth-place finish.

Three weeks later in Moscow, the squad recorded wins against Wales, Spain, Romania and Portugal to finish third. At the conclusion of the tournament, they finished in fourth place overall which meant that the qualification standards for the Commonwealth Games had been achieved.

The winners will be announced at the SWIS Awards on Friday 26 November at the Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow. Further details can be found here: https://www.scottishwomeninsport.co.uk/
