8 Feb 2023

Saturday sees the sixth instalment of The Doddie Weir Cup at BT Murrayfield with the much-missed rugby giant after whom the trophy is named being rightfully honoured throughout the day when Scotland meet Wales in Round 2 of the Guinness Six Nations Championship.

The rugby world comes together once again to remember Doddie Weir – who passed away last November aged 52 – and the contribution that he gave to both rugby and his inspirational fundraising for Motor Neurone Disease, the condition that took him from us.

The Doddie Weir Cup, which was jointly commissioned by Scottish Rugby and Welsh Rugby Union, is embellished by the tartan that is so synonymous with Doddie.

Supporters are being asked to join us by wearing tartan on Saturday at the match.

In support of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, Rob Wainwright is being joined by some 180 cyclists travelling from Cardiff to Edinburgh this week and covering in total some 555 miles to carry the match ball on its journey to BT Murrayfield. Among fellow British & Irish Lions taking part in some or all of the journey are Martin Johnson, Jeremy Davidson, Nigel Redman, Roger Baird and Craig Chalmers. Scottish Rugby past president Ian Barr is also part of the mass cycling pack. The journey will finish with Rob Wainwright presenting the match ball to Scottish Rugby’s patron, HRH The Princess Royal, just prior to kick off.

Supporters can donate direct to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation by scanning the QR code at the ‘Oor Doddie’ statue on Saturday which is located at the south-west corner of the stadium, near to the Macron Scottish Rugby Store.

We hope to see the crowd adorned with tartan scarves, trousers and hopefully a number of Doddie Aid regional snoods as the challenge, which raised an amazing £1million in its first 11 days, reaches its completion on Saturday.

It has also been confirmed today that Guinness has kindly donated this weekend’s Player of the Match award to the Foundation, which means it will be called the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation Player of the Match. The medal will be presented post-match by Doddie’s sons, Hamish, Angus and Ben.
