After a two-week European break, the United Rugby Championship is back for the festive derbies. Glasgow had two strong performances in the Champions Cup with a win over Sale at home and a very close loss to RC Toulon in France. Edinburgh, in the Challenge Cup, had a loss away to Glouster and a convincing win over Bayonne at home.
The URC form for the two teams, however, is something to be contested. In the last six URC games, Glasgow have only conceded one, against Hollywoodbet Sharks in South Africa back in October. Edinburgh have had more mixed results with three wins and three losses. However, it should be noted that all those losses have been away and their record at the Hive is unbeaten in their last three home outings.
In 1872 Cup games over the last nine fixtures between the two sides, Glasgow have only lost twice. Once in May 2022 and last December when Edinburgh edged the win at Murrayfield. Last year in the Scotstoun leg, Glasgow won 22-10 with tries through Kyle Rowe, Johnny Matthews and Ally Miller. Edinburgh’s only try came through WP Nel in the first half.
Johnny Matthews has once again shown himself to be on try scoring form, and interestingly he is currently tied on five tries with Ben Muncaster so this weekend could be the one to determine who takes the lead.
Heading into this historic game at Hampden, Glasgow are currently sitting second in the URC table with Edinburgh having moved into seventh position following their last URC win over Benetton.
