Getting to know: Dave Cherry

27 Jan 2021

There are four new faces in the Scotland squad for the upcoming Guinness Six Nations. Ewan Ashman, Dave Cherry, Alex Craig and Cameron Redpath have all been selected by Gregor Townsend and could be capped over the next couple of months.

Dave Cherry plays for Guinness PRO14 side, Edinburgh.

Cherry has played 30 times for Richard Cockerill’s side since joining in the summer of 2018.

The former Scotland U20 hooker has also represented French Fédérale 2 side Stade Niçois and spent three seasons at with English Championship side London Scottish, before moving to the south of France.

He played seven times for Scotland U20 back in the 2010/11 season and was one of seven debutants named in the 2019 Guinness Six Nations training squad.

A product of Merchiston Castle School, the 30-year-old played his senior rugby at Currie before making the move to English Championship side London Scottish in 2014.

Edinburgh-born Cherry cemented himself in the Championship outfit’s starting XV, but after three seasons at the Athletic Ground – in which he made 54 appearances, scoring 45 points in the process – Cherry joined Stade Niçois as part of Scottish Rugby’s performance pathway partnership. His recent form for Edinburgh sees him called up to the Scotland squad for the upcoming Guinness Six Nations and with Stuart McInally and Fraser Brown currently out injured, Cherry will be hoping to earn his first full cap for his country over the coming weeks.
