Getting to know: Ewan Ashman

26 Jan 2021

There are four new faces in the Scotland squad for the upcoming Guinness Six Nations. Ewan Ashman, Dave Cherry, Alex Craig and Cameron Redpath have all been selected by Gregor Townsend and could be capped over the next couple of months.

Ewan Ashman plays for English Premiership side, Sale Sharks.

Originally from Toronto, the 20-year-old hooker has represented Scotland at various age-grades, including U16, U17 and U19 levels.

Ashman enjoyed a breakthrough season in the 2019 U20 Six Nations, starting in four fixtures.

He was one of Scotland’s most impressive performers at the 2019 World Rugby U20 Championship, scoring seven tries to finish as the tournament’s top try-scorer.

Ashman continued his try-scoring exploits in the 2020 U20 Six Nations, scoring against both Ireland and England and dotting down twice against France, meaning he has scored 11 tries in 15 appearances at that level.

With fellow hookers Fraser Brown and Stuart McInally currently out injured, it’s a big opportunity for someone else to stake their claim for the number 2 shirt. Ashman will battle it out with Edinburgh’s Dave Cherry and Glasgow duo George Turner and Grant Stewart for a place in Gregor Townsend’s squad.
