Lana Skeldon Q&A
Learn more about Scotland forward Lana Skeldon in our quick-fire Q&A.
Where and when did you start playing rugby?
I started playing rugby when I was 4 years old at Hawick Rugby Club.
What was your first rugby memory?
My first rugby memory was running about at Mansfield Park just having an absolute blast! Playing with my friends and learning how to catch and pass the ball. No shock that my favourite part was practising smashing into the tackle pads!
Are there any other sports you enjoy playing or watching?
I watch most sports, but I do love it when the Olympics or World Cup is on and can follow it from start to finish.
What motivates you?
My motivation comes from my love for the sport, how happy it makes me and how proud my family are of me.
Tell us about earning your first Scotland cap
My first cap was in 2011 away against the Netherlands. I was very young and the whole experience was a bit of a blur as I was just so overwhelmed! I was on the bench and came on at back row for 25 minutes. It was probably the proudest moment of my playing career as I had always dreamed of playing for Scotland.

Form comes and goes but talent is forever – one of my best friends shared this with me when I was having a bit of a rough time and it is something that will never leave me. She messages me without fail before every game and just reminds me that I am always good enough and always will be so long as I continue to work hard and believe in myself.
Who is your role model and why?
There are so many role models out there for me but there I would say my parents are my biggest role models. They have taught me everything I know about life and a lot about rugby. It is their support that keeps me going and helps me through tough times and pushes me to be even better in the good times.
What is a personal goal you have set yourself for this season?
A personal goal for me at the moment is just to enjoy training and playing rugby. It’s been a very strange year and I think that for me if I’m not enjoying myself then something is wrong. I love rugby so I just want to make sure I’m enjoying it as much as I can!
What is the most memorable match you have played in and why?
Our away win to Ireland in 2018. It was a thrilling game to be part of but also to beat a team like Ireland away from home for the first time was just something very special to be part of. I was surrounded by my second family and we had just achieved an amazing thing, this just made my heart so happy and a memory I will never forget!
What are you currently watching?
I’m currently watching Grey’s Anatomy which I am absolutely hooked on!
What is something good that happened to you recently?
I set up my own little Instagram page for all my cooking and baking pictures and recipes – @skelpersscran. Just a little hobby away from rugby so I can relax, and I really enjoy cooking and baking for people so just wanted to share it all!
What advice would you give to anyone looking to start playing rugby?
Rugby is meant for everyone. If you aren’t sure just go along to your local club and I am sure they will take you right into their little family and make you feel so welcome! It is also fun, so no matter how far you go whether it is club or country, always enjoy it because it should always be something you look forward to.
