BT Premiership ROUND-UP: Boroughmuir overcome performers Ayr
Boroughmuir 24-11 AyrBoroughmuir overcame former league leaders Ayr in round six of the BT Premiership at Meggetland. A penalty opportunity for the hosts presented itself for captain Chris Laidlaw early doors, but the stand-off brushed the post with his attempt.Minutes later, Boroughmuir’s Jordan Edmunds and Matt Walker were involved in a near try opportunity but it was Ayr who opened the scoring through stand-off Frazier Climo with a penalty in front of the sticks.In the 20th minute, Climo added a second penalty for the visitors before Laidlaw responded with a successful penalty strike for Boroughmuir minutes later.In the 26th minute, Peter Wright’s men scored through Ross Dunbar after the Boroughmuir backs orchestrated space. Laidlaw converted.Edinburgh Rugby’s Jamie Ritchie was later held up over the line for Boroughmuir before a Laidlaw penalty attempt fell short before the break.Jamie Scott secured the Edinburgh side’s second try after the ball was recycled from an impressive Edmunds and Ritchie move, as Laidlaw added the extras.Scott saw yellow in the 65th minute and Ayr capitalised through a score from back-row Blair Macpherson, Climo pushing the conversion attempt shy of the posts.Even with the number shortage, Boroughmuir managed to send the ball through the hands and locate number 8 Craig Keddie for the squad’s third try of the match.Laidlaw converted and the hosts continued to pressurise in the closing stages to see out the game, recording an impressive result against the recent BT Premiership front-runners.Boroughmuir: Tries: Dunbar, Scott, Keddie. Melrose responded with several attacks in County’s 22 and it wasn’t long before a penalty was awarded in front of the posts, which Jason Baggott took full advantage of.In the 30th minute, the hosts set-up a powerful driving maul after a penalty kick to the corner put them in prime scoring position, Ruaridh Knott crashed over from metres out to send Melrose into the lead.After the interval, Hope converted a penalty opportunity before Melrose’s Baggott received yellow for interfering with a crucial try scoring pass for County.Nemia Kenatale was next in the bin as the visitors then struggled with the intensity of the Melrose attack, the ball moved along the backs to find Craig Jackson for a crucial score in the corner, as Baggott added the points with five minutes remaining.Melrose’s Jamie Bhatti cantered towards the posts minutes later for the host’s third try, but it was County who bagged the final score through replacement Alex Taylor. Hope made an impressive conversion.Baggott nailed a further penalty for Melrose in injury time, with the Borders side maintaining their second in the table position. Kerr Gossman was on fine form throughout, scoring four tries in total and securing his first two inside the opening 15 minutes. The first, courtesy of a pass from Scotland centurion Sean Lamont. A couple of penalties from Hawick full-back Neil Renwick kept the visitors within touching distance but after captain Bruce McNeill was sent to the bin in the 20th minute, Hawks began to ramp up the pace.A further four tries were scored before the break, Hawks captain Tommy Spinks barged his way over with George Horne adding the extras before Junior Bulumakau, Grant Stewart and Robert Beattie all found the whitewash.After the interval, Horne secured two tries of his own as a result of combining effectively with the dangerous Bulumakau, while Gossman recorded a further two for Hawks with Beattie orchestrating the offloads.However, Hawick continued to probe when possession came their way, McNeill touching down in the 68th minute following a driving maul with Renwick adding the points.Hawks went on the charge for the remaining stages of the game, Bulumakau claiming two tries within minutes of one another and replacement Paul Cairncross finding the line with support from the winger. It was matter of penalties in the first-half, with Gregor Hunter, the Gala stand-off, converting two penalty opportunities and Joe Helps responding with a penalty kick for Melrose.Gala secured the first try of the game after Rob Louw made a charging break up he wing before offloading to Paul Hendry for the score.The second-half provided Watsonians with quick ball and positions from which to mount several drives from close range.Gala’s Chris Keen was sent to the bin and the visitors capitalised with their first try from number 8 Euan Dods.A yellow for Watsonians replacement Angus Duckett spelled trouble for the visitors and a penalty for Hunter. Minutes later, the Gala stand-off recorded another penalty to keep the scoreboard ticking.Lewis Berg saw yellow for Gala and it was Watsonians who claimed the next score, pressure in the scrum resulting in Dods crashing over and Helps converting.Gala reacted through replacement Ross Combe after a lineout worked to great effect. The impressive Harvey Elms made an initial break from deep to set-up a lineout in the Heriot’s 22, from which Cammy Gray found Robbie Nelson for Currie’s first try under the posts, as Jamie Forbes converted.Heriot’s responded with a long range penalty from stand-off Alex Hagart before Forbes secured a penalty for Currie after Lee Jones was brought down within touching distance of the line.Nelson found Jones minutes later with a launching pass as Currie recorded their second try of the game. A penalty try converted by Hagart for Phil Smith’s men kept the contest close.Forbes rounded-up play in the first-half with another successful penalty attempt, with the hosts leading 18-10.After the break, Currie found momentum once again. Scrum-half Richard Snedden made a break from half-way to dodge the last man standing for a try. Forbes converted before adding penalty points for Currie.Martin Bouab found the line for Heriot’s after the visitors enjoyed sustained pressure in the opposition 22 but Forbes responded once again with another penalty for the hosts.
