BT Premiership ROUND-UP Boroughmuir overcome visitors Hawick
Boroughmuir recorded a bonus-point victory over Hawick in a survival of the fittest at Meggetland, as the hosts edge further away from the bottom of the table (60-18).
In what was a scrappy encounter between both sides, the capital outfit sealed their second home win – and lifted the Hugh Macmaster trophy – as they move up into 7th place in the table.
The hosts opened the scoring as hooker Johnny Matthews made a searing break before offloading to Matt Walker who finished the job. Greig Cannie slotted the conversion between the posts to add the extras.
On the 14th minute, an inital break by scrum-half Johnny Adams saw him feed to Grant McConnell who raced over the corner to score. Cannie capped it off with another successful conversion.
Hawick began to exert pressure in Boroughmuir’s territory and were soon rewarded with a penalty to which Ali Weir was successful with the boot.
Boroughmuir continued to probe the Hawick defence when possession came their way and were soon able to add to the points tally when Dan Marek crashed over the line from short range.
He was soon joined on the scoreboard by Ciaran Whyte who extended the lead for the hosts.
Hawick piled on the pressure again, securing two tries before the break courtesy of Bruce McNeill and Craig Hamilton.
However, a further try by Cannie helped to establish a 13-point lead for Boroughmuir by the end of the first half.
HALF-TIME: Boroughmuir 31 – 18 Hawick
Matthews saw yellow in the 42nd minute, however, Hawick were unable to exploit the opportunity as they relinquished possession whenever they were in Boroughmuir’s danger zone.
Despite being a man down, Boroughmuir bounced back when Ciaran Whyte scored his second try of the game.
Boroughmuir were on the charge for the remainder of the game, with Jordan Edmunds, Michael Brown, Rory Scott and Jack Hamilton finding the line.
FULL-TIME: Boroughmuir 60 – 18 Hawick
Elsewhere, Currie Chieftains edged out Stirling County at Malleny Park while Melrose continued to display their dominance in the league as they claimed another bonus point victory against Marr.
Ayr continued their winning momentum as they recorded a 41-17 victory over Heriot’s and Glasgow Hawks powered past visitors Watsonians.
