BT Premiership round-up: Hawick secure narrow win over Currie
Hawick 27-26 CurrieHawick secured their first win of the BT Premiership season with a narrow victory over Currie at Mansfield Park. The visitors were the first on the scoreboard, Currie’s Ben Robbins taking the ball from the line-out to touch down, before James Bywater added the extras.A second was then added for Currie as Cameron Hutchinson made a charge for the line, with Bywater slotting the conversion.However, it wasn’t all Currie in the first-half, Hawick managed a score before the interval with captain Bruce McNeil crashing over after the ball was moved left to right. Ali Weir added the conversion.Hawick secured a penalty after the break, Weir taking full advantage, as the hosts built momentum through the forwards and Currie’s Tommy Gordon saw yellow.Edinburgh Rugby’s Jack Cosgrove bagged Hawick’s second try after bustling his way over from a line-out, before Weir added the points to give the hosts the lead.Weir converted a penalty goal for Hawick before Currie responded with a try from Harvey Elms, which Bywater converted. Hawick came fighting back after an initial break from Michael Robertson found Wesley Hamilton for a try, as Weir added the points.Currie continued to pressurise through the backs before Cameron Gray darted over for the bonus point try and a score, which if converted, would sneak victory for the visitors. Watsonians then responded with a try of their own as Scott McLeod made his way over following some effective build-up play from both backs and forwards. Ewan Scott added the extras.Iain Moody looked to have scored for Melrose minutes later, but Andrew Chalmers had wrestled the ball from the back-row at the line.Melrose continued to pressurise and were rewarded with Knott bagging his second and Baggott involved in the set-up.Craig Jackson then went on the break for Melrose in the second-half and found Ross McCann for the visitor’s third try of the match.Jackson produced an impressive dummy to secure the bonus point try, with Melrose recording a comfortable win against a strong Watsonians side.Watsonians: Try: McLeod. Frazier Climo missed the conversion attempt but extended the lead with a penalty minutes later. County were effective in attack, Matt Lamb flying in for a try that was superbly converted by Jonny Hope. County stand-off Ross Jones strolled in under the posts for a score, but Ayr put their foot on the gas before the break, Man of the Match, Blair Macpherson touching down. Ayr captain Grant Anderson got the second-half off to an impressive start, his lightening pace bringing the first of two tries, before prop D’arcy Rae found a gap and rumbled over for a score. A penalty by Hope for County kept them in touch until Ayr pulled away, their superiority at the scrum, telling. Anderson’s second and replacement winger, Jamie Bova, sealed the win for Ayr, but County had the final say, winger Craig Pringle touching down for a fine try. Hawks’ captain Tommy Spinks bagged the first try of the game, after capitalising on prime position inside of the host’s 22, before Horne added the conversion.Boroughmuir responded with a score of their own, the impressive Dougie Steele locating Matt Walker for the run in as Laidlaw claimed the points.Hawks continued to look dangerous on the attack, Horne finding Kerr Gossman with a launching pass for another try. Boroughmuir bounced back once again, this time Jordan Edmunds received from Stuart Clark for a touch down.Boroughmuir’s Tom Cox was sent to the bin and it wasn’t long before Sean Yacoubian released Brendan McGroarty for a try under the posts. Horne converted.Prop Ross Dunbar finished play in the first-half with a score for Boroughmuir, which Laidlaw converted.A couple of penalties for Laidlaw after the interval sent the hosts into the lead. However, Hawks’ Robert Beattie intercepted a Laidlaw pass to race to the line before Horne converted.Horne then got on the end of a break from McGroarty for another Hawks try, the scrum-half also nailing the conversion.Two further tries for the visitors, from Grant Stewart and Spinks, sealed a comprehensive victory for the current table-toppers.Boroughmuir: Tries: Walker, Edmunds, Dunbar. The home side continued to impress in the pack, Struan Dewar going over after receiving from Charlie Simpson, who scored a try of his own minutes later with Simmers converting.Gala responded with a well-worked try from Edinburgh’s Rory Scholes, who gathered from Graham Speirs after the wing broke. Hunted converted.In the second-half, Gavin Parker put Simmers through on the inside ball for an early Heriot’s score. John Semple then chipped to the corner for Simpson to bag his second of the match.Heriot’s capitalised on a solid scrum position, and with the forwards pushing on, Simmers collected from the base to go over for his second.Replacement Ross Combe claimed a consolatory try for Gala in the closing stages after effective work from the backs earned the Borders side space, but it was Heriot’s who remained strong throughout the second-half to see out the match.Heriot’s: Tries: Dewar, Simpson (2), Simmers (2).
