Club president, Neil Rennie, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have received the BT Club of the Month award, as it’s testament to the whole club effort.”As a club, we’re heading back in the right direction, and that comes from everyone’s motivation to keep progressing.”Credit to the hard work of the coaching and background staff, the players and teams at all levels are continuing to improve and perform well.”The club currently runs 13 youth sides, with their growing numbers credit to their engagement with the local primary schools and the four local secondary schools. They regularly host upwards of 30 players in the each section, from their under-18 side to the micros sessions which encourage primary school kids to get involved with the sport at an early age.At the crux of the growing interest in the sport locally is the club development officer, Laurie Cuthbertson, who proactively goes out to the schools to encourage pupils to get themselves along to Canal Park.Rennie continued: “Our recent success is due to the structure of our youth system – the players involved in our senior sides are, at the moment, very young and products of the club.”There’s a realisation that if we get players involved at Highland, at an early stage, we can grow their interest and keep them at the club.”Highland have built close links with the local authorities through the facilities development at their home, Canal Park. The development will see Highland receive a new club house and changing facilities, as well as a 3G all-weather playing and training surface. “This time next year, we will have an artificial pitch, as well as our two normal grass surfaces, which is something we’re all really excited about,” he continued.”We hope that the facilities will encourage new people to the club, as we will have the ability to train in all conditions throughout the season.”The coaching group at the club worked tirelessly to ensure that the development plans came to fruition, and we can’t thank everyone involved enough for their efforts.”In March, Highland’s first XV won all four of their games in BT Caledonia League Division 1, defeating Gordonians (22-15), Orkney (26-10), Caithness (21-16) and Ellon (50-5) respectively. The club’s second XV did not have a competitive league game in March, yet have enjoyed a successful, undefeated season in BT Caledonia League Division 4 North, claiming victory in all six of their games.Highland have a good discipline record for the month, having received a single yellow card only across all levels. As part of their prize, Highland receive a 12-month BT Sport subscription and£200 cash. They will also win a table of 10 at the Scottish Rugby Club Awards Dinner on Friday 29 May 2015 and will be on the shortlist for the BT Club of the Season award, to be announced at the dinner.Ellon’s Falconer swoops in on Volunteer award The BT Volunteer of the Month award for March goes to Katie Falconer of Ellon, commended for her efforts to rejuvenate the club’s under-18 girls’ side. She said: “It’s fantastic to have received this award, I’m over the moon.”It’s great to be recognised for the work that you do behind the scenes.”Falconer, 17, holds down a number of roles in the Grampian club, primarily as coach and organiser of the girls’ under-18 side.Currently a student at Ellon Academy, Katie still manages to find time to be assistant referee, and is a regular supporter of all the club’s teams. She said: “My interest in rugby started a long time ago now, when I would go down to the local club to watch my brothers play.”I started playing rugby four years ago, and haven’t looked back since.”More recently, I’ve developed an interest in coaching and have managed to get my UKCC Level 1. I’m going to university next year to study for a degree in sports coaching, so it’s something I’m looking to pursue.”As well as coaching, Katie also plays a key role in the organising of the girls’ section and saved Ellon’s under-18 side from near collapse, reaching out to her friends and family to try their hand at the sport.”When the likes of Emma Wassell [current Scotland Women internationalist] left the club, we were really short of numbers,” she continued.”I couldn’t see what was a healthy part of the club die, so I approached my sister and some friends to come and get involved.”This season we have played six games, some sevens tournaments and are, hopefully, going on a tour to Windsor – we’re in a good place.”In winning the BT Volunteer of the Month award for March, Katie will receive a table-of-ten at the annual Scottish Rugby Club Awards Dinner at BT Murrayfield on Friday 29 May 2015 and a commemorative trophy.Nominations for the BT Volunteer of the Month award for April are now being taken at www.scottishrugby.org/clubnominations.
