Advanced Coaching Programme

The Advanced Coaching programme is replacement the UKCC Level 3 in Coaching Rugby Union. The programme has been designed to provide support and learning in all aspect of the coaching environment.

The Advanced Coaching Programme is a season-long coaching course that takes coaches on a journey to better understand coaching – looking not just at what to coach, but look deeper at the how and why behind coaching practice. Coaches will spend time watching back and reflecting on coaching practice, experiencing peer learning and will work with a dedicated mentor to further understand their coaching craft whilst working with their own players.

The course will cover:
• Planning – how to structure a season
• Working as part of a coaching team – better understanding co-coaching
• Coaching craft – effective session design and delivery
• Understanding your players – profiling players against the COGS of performance (rugby, physical, life and brain skills)
• Game Planning – understanding the game and delivering an appropriate game plan

The Advanced Coaching Programme is open to any coach delivering at Boys / Girls Youth Rugby (U15-U18) or Adult Male / Female Rugby who meet the following criteria:

Has completed Aspiring Coaching Programme or the UKCC level 2 or can demonstrate appropriate coaching experience.
• Is currently coaching a team and committed to continue coaching the same team for the duration of the programme.
• Can show a commitment to self-development and CPD attendance.
• Can attend all the on-course delivery modules / webinars and meet the set deadlines.
• Is 18 years of age or older.

The Advanced Coaching programme will have strand specific information targeting coaches from the Adult Male, Adult Female, Youth Male and Youth Female areas of the game. Applications will be accepted across the four stands and a proportion of the course will be reserved for each.

Applicants will be notified after the closing date via email if they have been successful or unsuccessful in their application.

Cost

The cost of the course for the 2024/25 programme is circa. £500.

Course Dates & Times

Applications for the Advanced Course are now open. To apply head over to SCRUMS and fill in the application form.

Day 1 & Day 2 of the course will take place in June 2026 and applicants must be available to attend both days of either of the following options.

OPTION 1 – Friday 12th & Saturday 13th June @ sportscotland National Training Centre, Largs
OPTION 2 – Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th June @ Fife College, Dunfermline Learning Campus

Day 3 will take place in September 2026, Day 4 in January 2027 and Day 5 in May 2027. These will be delivered regionally (Caledonia, West, East).
