David became the eighth rugby player to become immortalised in Scotland’s sporting history joining the likes of Gavin Hastings, Andy Irvine and the 1925 Grand Slam centre Phil Macpherson. At the ceremony presided over by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, David was honoured alongside other sporting icons: Olympic swimmer Catherine Brown; disability sportswoman, Isabel Newstead MBE and a posthumous award to rally driver, Colin Macrae MBE, Ms Sturgeon said: Honouring these sporting greats highlights our outstanding achievements as a nation and gives us a great opportunity to look back on the many champions our country has produced. David’s career spanned 44 caps for his country culminating in captaincy during the 1990 Grand Slam. The power and dynamism he demonstrated in a Scotland shirt mirrored his invaluable contribution in the 1989 British and Irish Lions victorious tour in Australia. Where leadership skills are concerned, few players have presented the same unyielding desire for success. As well as captaining his country, David also led the Barbarians side on several occasions and a World Invitation XV that overcame New Zealand in 1992. Such a career typified by success acts as a benchmark for future sporting hopefuls. Louise Martin CBE, chair, sportscotland and Chair of the Selection Panel, said: Colin, David, Catherine and Isabel are a huge inspiration to sporting generations and it is right that their achievements are recognised by our nation in this way. The latest recipients bring the total number of sportsmen and women honoured in the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame to 82.
