Edinburgh BATs win National U16 Youth Bowl Final
Edinburgh BATs were crowned National U16 Youth League Bowl champions after defeating Birkmyre 17-0 at BT Murrayfield on Sunday. It was a close first-half with only one try from Edinburgh BATs separating the two teams at half-time as a result of wet and windy conditions.Edinburgh BATs continued to impress after the interval, scoring two tries in quick succession to seal their fate as champions before Birkmyre gave it everything in the closing stages.Edinburgh BATs Head Coach, Callum Black, said: “The wind was against us in the first-half but we did really well to come through in the end.Our club brings a lot of boys from different walks of life, from different schools, that may not have not have played together before, so it was great to see them perform in a final at BT Murrayfield.”Early pressure came from Birkmyre but it was Edinburgh BACs who opened the scoring through Rory Jackson in the 30th minute after several drives from the forwards put pressure on the Birkmyre defence.Harry Paterson sent the conversion wide before a 5-0 scoreline concluded the first-half with both teams producing running rugby despite the conditions. With the wind now in favour of Edinburgh BATs, the capital side began to mount pressure deep inside the Birkmyre half before captain Jamie Millar charged over in the 50th minute left of the posts. Paterson struck the posts with his conversion attempt as Birkmyre began to launch an attack minutes later with Ben Trodden and Rowan Gibson threatening in the backs.Edinburgh BATs continued to dominate and soon scored their third try of the afternoon after Rowan Gibson went on a run along the left wing to set the ball for the forwards who found Paterson to run in for the score before converting.Birkmyre gained momentum in the final stages and found themselves several metres from the Edinburgh BATs try line but a knock-on halted momentum before the leading side regained possession to see out the game.
