Exclusive: Mcmillan On First Scotland Call
On his return from Connacht with the Glasgow squad this weekend, no matter the result, Glasgow’s new scrum-half, Mark McMillan, will be grinning from ear to ear come Monday morning. The reason for his beaming demeanour is that on Tuesday morning, he received a text message from the national management team informing him that he has been called up for his first ever training session with the senior Scotland team.Playing for Scotland is the reason I played rugby at eight years old, he said, and nothing has changed. It’s obviously a huge ambition of mine.People have focussed a lot on my decision to move to Scotland to challenge for a place in the Scotland squad, but although it was a huge factor in my decision, Im 100% dedicated to being successful with Glasgow as well. Im just keeping my head down and focussing on my week to week goals with the Warriors.Although his achievement is remarkable after only two competitive games for The Biggest Team in Glasgow, McMillan remains realistic.’there are four scrum-halves in the squad and some of those guys like Mike Blair and Chris Cusiter have had the number 9 jersey for a long time. But Ive got to look at it as a massive opportunity to show the coaches what I can do.Professional and international sport is extremely competitive and the competition in the squad is huge so you have to take every chance youre given. I intend to make the most of mine.
