FOSROC Super6 Sprint Series Review of the Round | Round 2

The second round of FOSROC Super6 Sprint Series action got underway on Friday evening, here's how the matches played out.

SATURDAY 23 APRIL: STIRLING COUNTY v AYRSHIRE BULLS 

In the first 10-minutes of the game Stirling County opened the scoring when Marcus Holden booted a loose ball up-field. It was then a foot race between the two wingers, Eli Caven (Bulls) and Ross McKnight (County). McKnight got to it first and dotted it down with Holden adding the extras.

Lewis McNamara got the first points on the board for the visitors when he secured the ball down after a rolling maul.

County extended their lead when George Arnott went in-between the posts with Holding two extra points.

Bulls soon brought the game to within two points when Grant Stewart went over the whitewash with Christian Townsend adding the conversion.

Just before half-time County centre Ben Salmon made a break up the pitch, Logan Trotter was on his shoulder and went in for another score before the half-time whistle – Holden added the conversion.

HALF-TIME: STIRLING COUNTY 21-12 AYRSHIRE BULLS

It took 26 minutes for the first score of the second half to come but when Bulls scrum-half Cam Jones collected an off-load from captain Blair Macpherson he went in for a score with Townsend adding a conversion.

County then scored two more tries in quick succession by John McKenna and Walter Fafia with Holden converting one of the tries.

Despite a last minute try for Bulls by Joe Knight, hosts Stirling County claimed the win.

SATURDAY 23 APRIL: SOUTHERN KNIGHTS v WATSONIANS

Southern Knights has a strong start when Nathan Chamberlin nudged a penalty between the sticks in sixth minute, from just outside the 22.

After period of pressure Watsonians patience eventually paid off in 13th minute when Ryan Daley broke through the line with Jason Baggott adding the conversion.

On the half hour mark Watsonians opted to kick to the corner. The drove the maul forward and offloaded to scrum-half Murray Scott who used clever footwork to score their second try.

From a quick tap penalty Knights went deep into the 22, Nathan Chamberlain pulled Knights back into the game when he snuck through the defence to dot it down and followed up with his own conversion to make it a two-point game at the half.

HALF-TIME: SOUTHERN KNIGHTS 10-12 WATSONIANS

First points in the second half went to Watsonians when Baggott slotted a penalty from 30-metres out.

Near the hour mark Billy Wara intercepted the ball on the half-way line to canter in a try for the hosts, Chamberlin converted the try inbetween posts to give the Knights the lead for first time.

Shortly after Watsonians Captain Cal Davies picked up the ball and powered over through a few Knights defenders to restore Watsonians lead, with Baggott adding the conversion.

With 10-minutes left in the game, Chamberlain slotted a penalty in-front of the posts to pull it back to a two-point game, 20-22.

In the last few moments of the game Watsonians made a break down the far right hand side, a shoulder charge from Billy Wara (Southern Knights) lead to XX awarding the visitors a penalty try and showing Wara a yellow card.

FRIDAY 22 APRIL: BOROUGHMUIR BEARS v HERIOT’S RUGBY 

Heriot’s Rugby continued their fine start in the FOSROC Super6 Sprint Series with a 38-22 victory over a resilient Boroughmuir Bears in a 10-try affair at Meggetland.

After a fairly quiet opening quarter, Chris Dean’s miss pass in the 26th minute found Gregor Tait in space on the left wing to open the scoring.

The game lit up from there, and Heriot’s had a second score in the 33rd minute when a perfectly-weighted cross-field kick from Bruce Houston found Jack Blain all alone on the right, and the winger had a simple finish.

The visitors found a third try in the 39th minute, as Dean’s hard work chasing a kick up the pitch was rewarded when he intercepted Adam Scott’s pass and raced under the posts.

Bears got themselves back into the game on the brink of half time as hooker Corey Tait crashed over off the back of a driving maul. Referee Finlay Brown originally decided the ball had been held up, but after consulting with his assistant he was happy that Tait had grounded it.

HALF-TIME: BOROUGHMUIR BEARS 5-17 HERIOT’S RUGBY

Just three minutes into the second half, FOSROC Super6 history was made. Rhys Tait barged his way over for Bears from close range, meaning he and younger sibling Corey became the first brothers to score in the same match.

It looked like Bears may stage a comeback, but Heriot’s extended the gap between the two sides and claimed a bonus point in the 51st minute. After a driving maul on the left was defended well by Bears, the away side worked the ball over to the right for Ross Jones to score in the corner.

Heriot’s had a fifth in the 66th minute, as Chris Dean pulled the ball back to substitute Charlie Savala, who dummied and found a gap between two defenders.

Bears grabbed a third score in the 71st minute, as Scott McGinley made a break from the back of a ruck and Scott Robeson found the line a phase later.

But Heriot’s scored again just two minutes later, as Ruaridh Leishman found space on the left and offloaded inside to Jed Gelderbloom, who stepped round Tom Brown and sprinted over.

Bears finished the scoring and earned a bonus point as Chris Anderson crashed over on his FOSROC Super6 debut for the Meggetland side, but the win went to Heriot’s who stay top of the table.
