Report: Chile 11-52 Scotland

Scotland continued their 100% record on the Skyscanner Americas Tour with a 52-11 victory over Chile in Santiago which saw Kyle Rowe and Matt Currie score their first tries for their country.

Scotland had much of the early ball, and in the 5th minute the first line break came from Ben Healy. He charged down the left side of the field, getting tackled just outside Chile’s 22, but two phases later Steyn knocked on. Scotland were presented with a real opportunity when they won a penalty at the scrum and kicked to the right corner, but the maul went awry and Chile won themselves a penalty.

Chile took the lead in the 10th minute via the boot after Ben Healy was penalised for not rolling away. Santiago Videla stepped up and knocked over the penalty from over 40 metres out. [3-0, 10 mins]

Scotland had several chances for a first try after a succession of penalties that were kicked into the corner, but each time the Chilean maul defence was solid and they eventually trapped the ball and won themselves a scrum.

Scotland were getting opportunities from winning penalties, though the lineout was faltering largely due to continued strong maul defence from the hosts. But eventually Scotland were able to get themselves over the line in the 22nd minute. A maul was again quickly halted but the forwards kept the ball in tight, and it was Josh Bayliss who eventually wrestled his way over beside the posts. Ben Healy quickly knocked over the extras. [3-7, 22 mins]

But after the score Scotland gave away to penalties in quick succession, first for an illegal maul jackal and then for collapsing a maul, and Tomás Salas kicked over the posts from the left side on the 22 to bring his side to within a point. [6-7, 27 mins]

Scotland got a second try just two minutes later. Jamie Ritchie won a jackal penalty straight from kick off, and it was kicked into the right corner. Sione Tuipulotu carried hard from the first phase, and then Healy’s floating pass out to Kyle Rowe on the left wing was perfect for the full back to grab it, saunter infield and score his first Scotland try, which was converted by Healy. [6-14, 30 mins]

And a third try soon followed. After a charge up the right straight from kick off from Gregor Brown, Scotland won another penalty which was again kicked into the right corner. Scotland played infield for two phases before Ben Healy called to go back down the right, and the stand-off floated a lovely pass to the right wing for Jamie Dobie, who went over untouched. Healy nailed the conversion from wide right. [6-21, 35 mins]

Another penalty, and another kick to the right corner, followed shortly after, but this time though Dylan Richardson rampaged over the line with three defenders clinging to him, the defenders managed to hold him up.

Half time: Chile 6-21 Scotland

Scotland started the second half with a passage of play that was a regular occurrence in the first. A penalty (this time for a high tackle on Tuipulotu from Videla) was kicked into the corner by Healy, and from the lineout the backs worked a lovely move from left to right which saw Arron Reed find space. His well-timed pass found Rowe, and he unselfishly found Dobie in the right corner for his second of the night. The conversion from Healy was this time wide. [6-26, 46 mins]

Chile then got their first try soon after. While Scotland were struggling with the maul, the hosts were finding success from theirs, and substitute hooker Diego Escobar was at the back to crash over. The conversion went wide. [11-26, 50 mins]

Dobie thought he was in for his hat-trick not long after, when he won a jackal penalty deep in Chilean territory and tapped quickly, but he was tackled just short and turned over himself, giving the hosts the chance to exit.

But it was instead time for another player to get their first Scotland score. After building the phases nicely, Matt Currie found space on the right side of the pitch and raced over the line from just outside the 22. Hastings knocked over the extras. [11-33, 57 mins]

Scotland got themselves up to the line again through kicking a penalty, which saw Diego Escobar sent to the sin bin, to the corner, but it was again defended well by Chile who won a jackal penalty inches short of their line to escape.

But the home side couldn’t stop Kyle Rowe from getting his second try. Similar to Dobie’s second, it was a backs move from left to right with Reed coming off of his wing to find space and link up with the full-back for the score. Hastings’ conversion kept the scoreboard ticking over. [11-40, 66 mins]

Rowe looked to be in for his hat-trick a minute later. Dobie’s chipped box kick was perfect for the Glasgow man and he raced for the line, but Diego Warnken recovered well and his offload to Reed went forward.

Richardson crashed over the line for a second time, and it was this time awarded. A high kick lead to a turnover for Scotland and Hastings kicked out right to Steyn, who caught it in his fingertips and slalomed round his opposite man. He was tackled just short and Rowe got even closer before the Sharks forward fought to reach the line. Hastings missed with the conversion. [11-45, 76 mins]

With less than a minute left, Kyle Steyn went over for a final try. Strong carries narrowed up Chile’s defence and the outside centre saw a gap open up in front of him on the right side, and like Currie he showed great speed to race through and over. Hastings added the extras. [11-52, 80 mins]
