Review of Round 6 | FOSROC Super Series

Friday 31 May: Southern Knights v Stirling Wolves
KO 7:35pm

Wolves winger Ross McKnight found a hole in the Knights defence to run in for the opening try of the game which Marcus Holden converted. 

They pulled ahead when Ryan Southern ran in for a try after a lovely set-piece move by the back line which Holden converted again.

Home side Southern Knights got on the scoreboard when Marcus Rhodes powered his way over the try line from a quick tap.

Southern dotted down for his second of the evening when he finished off a well worked team try in the corner with Holden adding the extra two points on offer.

Knights hit back only moments later when Callum Grieve used his niffty footwork to cross the try line in between the posts, he converted his own try.

Just before the half time whistle Knights prob Callum Crookshank and second row Angus Runciman stormed up field, the ball was recycled and found fellow front row prop Jack Dobie who danced in for a score. Grieve added the conversion to make it a three-point game.

From a lineout maul Wolves went over the tryline in the last play of the game thanks to Shaun McDonald which Holden converted.

HALF TIME: Southern Knights 19-28 Stirling Wolves

Ed Hassell pulled the Wolves ahead thanks to an offload from Craig Jackson with Holden adding the conversion. McKnight powered down the wing to run in for their sixth try of the night only moments later.

Southern made a lovely linebreak and fed the ball out to Eric Davie who went in for another try half-way through the second half, this time Euan Cunningham added the conversion. They scored again from a blindside move at the side of a scrum which led to Fergus Reid crossing the whitewash with Cunningham adding the conversion.

Five minutes later Knights managed to get on the scoreboard again thanks to a rolling maul try from Harri Morris with Grieve adding the extra two points.

With two minutes left on the clock Morris went over once again from a rolling maul try with Grieve’s conversion attempt successful.

Saturday 1 June: Heriot’s v Ayrshire Bulls
KO 3pm

The first score came for the hosts when Ruairidh Leishman ran the ball down the field to dot down in the corner.

Both Bulls’ James Malcolm and Heriots’ Liam Richman were shown yellow cards and sent to the sin bin.

It took another fifteen minutes for the next score to be added, but Heriot’s Sam Wallace found the space at the side of the maul to slip past and secure another five-pointer. Christian Townsend made the extras.

The Bulls finally added to their scoreboard through Luca Bardelli after some patient play saw the wing dot down. Richie Simpson added the conversion.

HALF TIME: Heriot’s 12 – 7 Ayrshire Bulls

An early score in the second half saw Jack Blain add his name to the Heriot’s score board and dot down over the the white wash. Christian Townsend converted.

The Bulls were next to score when Jamie Shedden tanked up the field and was over in the corner to add another five for the visitors.

Quick reactions saw Bulls’ Lewis McNamara get his hands on the ball and ground in the corner. Richie Simpson converted, bringing the score level.

In the 77th minute the Bull’s managed to bring themselves in front when Thomas Glendinning added another five points. Richie Simpson converted, securing both their win and their pay in next week’s 1 v 2 play off.

Saturday 1 June: Watsonians v Boroughmuir Bears
KO 3pm

The first score of the hosts as after a series of pick and goes saw loosehead prop Craig Davidson crash past the defence and over the line. The conversion was made by Jason Baggot.

Within the 16th minutes the Bears responded when a breakthrough the defence close the line saw captain Scott Robeson dive over the whitewash. George Paul got the extras.

Only a couple of minutes later, Freddy Owsley got his hands on the ball just after the half way line and danced round the defence to score in the corner.

Watsonians third came through Freddy Owsley after the ball was taken from the maul and offloaded out to the wing who slipped past the Bears defence to dot down. Jason Baggott’s kick was good again.

A heavy driving maul got Watsonians back towards their try line and Gavin Parry secured their bonus point try just before the break.

HALF TIME: Watsonians 24 – 7 Boroughmuir Bears

The Bears were first to score in the second half when the ball was played out of the ruck and to Matt Reid on the wing who sprinted for the corner. George Paul got the extras.

A Watsonians driving maul with hooker Matt Pritchard at the helm sealed the deal for the hosts as he collapsed over the ball and added another five points. Jason Baggott’s kick was successful.

To finalise the score right before the full time whistle, Jason Baggott sprinted up the pitch and bypassed all Bears defence to dive over in the corner.
