Roundup: Merchiston Castle School U18 Rugby Festival day one

District sides Edinburgh Reivers U18 and Glasgow Caledonian Reds U18 were two of five Scottish sides to advance to the trophy quarter finals of the Merchiston Castle School U18 Rugby Festival.

Boroughmuir RFC U18, Merchiston Castle School and Dollar Academy also advance to the trophy quarter finals.

Glasgow Caledonian Reds won all three of their matches on day one, advancing as group three leaders.

They defeated Dame Allan’s School 26-14 in their opening match, then went on to beat Seaford College 12-0 before finishing with a 21-12 victory over Collegiate School. They will face Boroughmuir in the trophy quarter-final.

Edinburgh Reivers were also victorious in all three of their day one fixtures and topped group four.

Starting with a 45-5 win over Wycliffe College, they went on to beat Norwich School 22-0 and Boroughmuir 31-0. They face Seaford College in the trophy quarter-final.

Hosts Merchiston Castle School were undefeated in group one, and advance to face Dollar Academy.

A 50-7 win over Ayr RFC was followed up by wins against St Benedict’s School (43-7) and Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation (7-0).

Their quarter-final opponents, Dollar Academy, finished second in group two with two wins and a defeat.

They opened with a 33-0 win over Peebles RFC and then beat Barnard Castle School 19-14, before losing their final group game 15-12 to Mount St Mary’s College.

The final Scottish side to progress in the trophy was Boroughmuir, who finished second in group four with two wins.

They beat Norwich School 20-10 and Wycliffe College 7-5 before losing 31-0 to Edinburgh Reivers. They will face Glasgow Caledonian Reds tomorrow morning.

Peebles will enter the bowl competition, and face St Benedict’s School in the quarter-final after three defeats in group two.

Ayr also enter the bowl, and face Barnard Castle after three defeats in group four.

The competition will continue tomorrow at Merchiston Castle School, with the first games at 10am.
