Scots impress in World Sevens events
Six Scots were involved in the last weekend’s HSBC World Sevens Series events in Edmonton, Vancouver, with GB7s Women winning their Fast Four tournament and GB7s Men getting to the final, to ensure a medal for the second straight event.
Shona Campbell featured in each of her side’s matches in Canada, scoring a try in their victory over Mexico and playing her part in two wins over USA, as well as a draw with the hosts.
For the Men, Jamie Farndale, Robbie Fergusson, Paddy Kelly, Ross McCann and Max McFarland each played prominent roles in GB’s run to the final, Scots registering no fewer than 12 tries across the competition as they came up just short in the final against South Africa, who were crowned series winners of a shortened competition.
The events in Edmonton followed a similar format in Vancouver last weekend, where once again GB7s won the Women’s Fast Four event, Campbell starting in the final against USA, and the Men finished as bronze medal winners, defeating Ireland in their play-off match.
The HSBC World Sevens Series, which has been on hiatus on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, will return for the 2021/22 campaign in due course, as the game of sevens looks forward to what should be an action-packed 12 months including both the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in South Africa.
