Silver Saturday Preview: Men’s League Cup final: Lasswade v Falkirk

Having secured their spots at the weekend, Lasswade and Falkirk will play at Scottish Gas Murrayfield for the National League Cup on Silver Saturday (kick off 1.45pm).

Both competing in National League Division 2 this season, Lasswade are currently in second place having played all their games, but Falkirk would overtake them on points difference if they win with a bonus point in their final game against Stirling County on Saturday 4 May.

Having been given a bye in round one, Lasswade then went straight through to the quarter-final after Orkney withdrew from the competition.

A 35-7 win away to Stirling County was followed by a 24-23 win over Allan Glen’s in the semi-final to get them to Saturday’s final.

Head Coach Peter Wright said: “The cup is always a good distraction from the league with the carrot of getting a chance to play on the main pitch at Murrayfield.

“The majority of the team has come through the youth ranks of the club. Having come through two tough games to get to the final, we are looking forward to locking horns with our league rivals Falkirk for the third time this season, with the previous two games being high-scoring and exciting.”

Falkirk picked up an away win, beating Stewarty 20-25, in round one, before a 50-15 win over Gordonians in round two.

Their quarter-final tie saw Falkirk win 32-27 away to Preston Lodge, setting up a semi-final with Newton Stewart, who they beat 21-20 at home.

Captain Harry Russell said: “It will be a huge honour to lead the squad out and get to represent the entirety of Falkirk Rugby Club at Murrayfield this weekend. It’s been 17 years since Falkirk last got the opportunity to play in a cup final there. From our current playing squad, Connor Faulds, Glen Faulds and Gregor Dodd watched their fathers and were mascots on that day so it shows the club are developing talented players.

“We’ve had some really tough games and close results to get us to the final, and I hope this has built up some resilience so if we do come under pressure as a team we know how to handle it and stick to our processes. Stewartry, Gordonians, Preston Lodge and Newton Stewart provided us with real tests on our way to the final. Having played Lasswade twice this season in the league, we know they’re a very physical team and they showed that in our most recent fixture against them. They are a well-coached outfit and they will have to be at our very best.

“I’ve only ever been to Murrayfield as a fan, so I’m really excited about getting onto the pitch. This current group of players have worked hard over the last five years and are continuing to grow and get better year on year. The whole club has seen significant growth over this time also, and on behalf of all the players at the club, we would like to thank our committee, coaches, sponsors and supporters who do everything they can to help us week on week. Hopefully we can get a result for everybody that has been part of the club’s journey.”
