Full time debrief

Wow, what a match.

Most were expecting a tight result, but what a back and forth 80 minutes that became.

Huge credit must go to Wales for battling the full 80, despite being down to 13 men for what must have felt like eons. Their never say die attitude made the match what it was.

Huge credit also to Kenny Murray’s men. That was by far their best performance of the U20 Six Nations. They ran out deserved winners and secured a bonus point in doing so.

Freddy Douglas was immense and thoroughly deserved to be named man of the match in front of a huge 5,485 in attendance.

For Scotland, attentions now turn to the fifth and final U20 Six Nations match against France on Friday 14 March.

Thank you for being with us tonight in Edinburgh. We’re signing off for now.

FT

Full time: Scotland 27 – 12 Wales

Scotland have a goal line drop out as the clock runs over the 80. It came from a penalty which Wales missed touch for the second time.

They go short, win the ball back and boot the ball out of the stadium as Scotland record an emphatic and resounding victory!

21:20

Second half snaps as Scotland record their maiden victory!

79'

Final throes

Scotland get greedy in their newest assault into the Welsh 22 and are penalised for holding on.

Meanwhile, Freddy Douglas is named player of the match.

76'

Four minutes left!

That opens up a 15-point gap as Scotland now look to close out what would be a famous victory.

Wales won’t lie down though as they get creative in attack, stabbing grubbers through, going to the air, or straight down the throat. Four minutes left in this one.

77'

Toll of the match catching up

A bit of fisty-cuffs as the click winds down here. Nothing in it though.

Players are dropping like flies here and needing medical attention.

74'

TRY Scotland – Douglas!

Lineout throw is good and it’s brought down for a rumble at the line.

The rumble is even better! Scotland’s momentum drags them over the line and – that man – Freddy Douglas comes up for plaudits as it’s been awarded a try!

That’s Scotland’s bonus point try. The conversion attempt misses. (Scotland 27 – Wales 12)

Image

73'

Fyffe on for his debut

Another promising Welsh attack comes to an abrupt halt as Douglas wins another jackal penalty.

The ball is thumped down field out of harm’s way. Mark Fyffe is coming on for his debut, Oli Duncan makes way.

70'

Scotland getting lucky

Wales break down the left wing, and they’re under advantage after the winger is eventually brought down as the Scots are all offside.

As the clock ticks over the 70 minute mark, play is brought back to the infringement mark.

They don’t bother pointing to the posts, opting to kick to the corner. But they’ve got it all wrong, and the ball has gone dead, rather than out!

It’ll be a scrum to Scotland. Jamie Stewart is on for Ollie Blyth-Lafferty.

67'

Penalties stack up, Wales make changes

Discipline from both sides has been the name of the game this half.

Another penalty is given to the Scots and the ball is lofted into the stands as Wales ring in the changes across their front and second row.

66'

Change in the backs for Scotland

Cameron van Wyk is on for Moncrieff, who has had a ripping game.

65'

PENALTY – Scotland extend the lead

But it’s immediately given back to the Welsh with a penalty at the scrum.

Their lineout is wasted as it’s been won by the Scots and thumped back into the 22.

Now it’s the Scots’ turn to win an attacking penalty. They point straight to the posts for Coates to line up. He pops it over with minimal fuss!

(Scotland 22 – 12 Wales)

61'

Scotland’s turn to probe

An up and under works wonders as the Welsh knock on in the air and Scotland can play under a short arm advantage.

A few phases later, they do in fact come back for the scrum about 30 metres out from the Welsh line.

60'

Wales on top, Scotland escape

Wales are coming. The last 10 minutes they have been well and truly on top here.

Despite the numerical advantage, Scotland seem to retreating into their shell a little – a dangerous place to be when the lead is slender.

Another promising Welsh attack comes to a grinding halt as the ball is lost forward in contact.

57'

Scotland change, Wales penalty

Isaac Coates has come on for Urwin at fly half.

In the meantime, Scotland have been pinged for yet another penalty at the breakdown. Douglas went into contact isolated and the Welsh pounced on him.

55'

TRY Wales – Harry Thomas

But our own lineout is overthrown and it’s straight into the arms of hooker Harry Thomas.

He dives in untouched and Scotland’s lead diminishes. Wilde misses the conversion though and the hosts are only a converted try ahead. (Scotland 19 – 12 Wales)

54'

Welsh resurgence

A penalty now for Wales, near halfway. Ollie Blyth-Lafferty was off his feet.

They kick toward the corner, but the throw is too long and it’s gathered well by Stephen. Another penalty for Wales, though, as Scotland were too late to the breakdown, holding on in the tackle.

Again Wales go to the corner, and again they have chances from the rolling maul.

They pick and go, popping the pass wide to – no one! It tumbles safely into touch for a Scottish lineout.

51'

Welsh chance, but it’s dealt with

A chance there for Wales as they put a clever chip and chase through, to be chased by Aidan Boshoff.

Clever defending though, from Scotland as Fergus Watson waits for the ball to cross the try line before dotting down safely.

The goal line drop out is good and sees the ball tumble back into the Welsh half.

50'

Scotland ring the changes

Changes for Scotland – Jake Shearer, Seb Stephen and Bart Godsell are on for Oli McKenna, Joe Roberts and Charlie Moss.

47'

Gaps opening for Scotland

More aerial ping pong, before Brown settles and returns with pace.

Oliver Duncan reaches the 22, and they surge into space, finding gaps in the weakened Welsh defence.

The ball is flung wide to Moncrieff, who has played so well, but this time the pass is knocked on, and Wales are gifted a reprieve.

44'

Scotland come agonisingly close to a fourth

Lineout is good for Scotland, and they move through the hands and through the phases.

Creeping towards the Welsh try line, Scotland’s progress is slow but steady.

Must be north of 15 phases now, but it’s patient play. The Welsh 13-man defence is standing tall too, though.

A final push from the skipper, Douglas, but it’s deemed to be a jackal penalty and it’s turned over to Wales.

41'

The teams are back, and we’re underway again

We’re back underway at Hive, here.

Urwin kicks us off and Wales clear, before a bit of aerial ping pong to settle the second half.

Eventually, Wales get clear down to the edge of their 22.

20:20

Half time debrief

Well, a cracking half for Scotland there, after a shaky start.

Freddy Douglas took the bull by the horns, asserting his dominance in the forward pack, and earning himself a try in doing so.

Nairn Moncrieff has also been a standout performer. Winning defensive jackal penalties, try scoring, and try assisting!

Meanwhile, Wales have been the architects of their own situation. After a great start, threatening the Scottish line multiple times, their discipline deserted them and they ended the half with 13 players on the pitch.

One of those will return about five minutes into the second half, but the other is a full red card, meaning they will play out the rest of the match with 14.

Scotland lead at half time by 19 points to 7.

HT

A look back at the top snaps from the first half

HT

Half time: Scotland 19 – 7 Wales

Into added time we go, with Wales feeding the scrum right on Scotland’s line.

Outstanding defence though, as Scotland win the scrum penalty, tap and clear the ball out of play to go in to half time 19 – 7 up.

What a frantic half of rugby.

39'

Frantic ending to the half

Wales have won another penalty, this time inside the 22.

They don’t opt for the points though, instead taking the corner and driving. But they’re being driven back by the Scots.

Now the ball comes out, and it spills loose for a Scot to dive on, with just a minute or so remaining in the half. A Welsh player is down, receiving treatment in the break.

37'

Tit-for-tat clearances

Scotland hoof it up the field and rumble into the 22, but it’s a penalty for a second movement after the tackle.

Wales clear upfield. That’s just 13 men on the park for Wales at the moment.

35'

Red card – Tom Cottle

A second red card – this time for Tom Cottle. It did look pretty bad to be fair. Looks to be the right call again.

35'

TMO: taking their time to get it right

It looks in fact to be a shoulder-head contact after Cowan cleared the ball upfield.

The referee is taking his time with this one. Cowan has gone off for a HIA, replaced by Hamish MacArthur.

And the verdict is…

35'

Potential TMO review: late tackle

There could be another TMO review here on a Welsh player who seemed to take out Noah Cowan late.

34'

TRY Scotland!! Brown

Scotland string a few phases together before opting to put ball to boot in a low stab into the Welsh 22.

The Welsh lineout is turned over and the hosts immediately turn to a cross-kick into the arms of Moncrieff, who nabs it and – in mid-air – pops a pass to fullback Brown to cross over for the third Scottish try of the night.

Urwin again lines up from the sideline and this time nails it. (Scotland 19 – 7 Wales)

Image

28'

TRY Scotland – Moncrieff

Can Scotland make the most of this golden opportunity to increase their lead?

Penalties are beginning to rack up, and it’s another for the hosts. Again, they opt to kick towards the corner for a rumble.

The lineout is good, the follow up is great, and the ball is flung wide, from left to the extreme right for Moncrieff to collect the ball, and cross over!

It’s a picture perfect try, right in the corner, touching the flag in the air and landing over the line to touch down for Scotland’s second try.

Urwin lines up the conversion on the touch line and it just misses to the right. (Scotland 12 – 0 Wales)

Image

31'

TRY Wales – Emanuel

They rumble, and drive, and it pays off!

Prop Ioan Emanuel is the scorer. He picks it off the floor after a clever tackle on the stand in scrum half, swerves a tackler and dots down near the left hand corner.

Replacement fly half Wilde nails the conversion in a swirling breeze. (Scotland 12 – 7 Wales)

30'

Welsh options now

Straight from kick off, a penalty to Wales, for not releasing.

It came from a poor pass that went to ground from the Scots, and the visitors take the opportunity to launch down field and into the Scottish 22.

Their rumble is good and the pick and goes begin.

24'

Red card: Logan Franklin

The verdict is: a red card for Logan Franklin.

It’ll be a 20 minute red card for Wales. That’s their scrum half off, and their first choice fly half injured inside the first half hour.

24'

TMO review: potential croc roll

We’re going upstairs to the TMO though…

We seem to be looking at a potential croc roll on Nairn Moncrieff from the Welsh half back.

It doesn’t looks good on first glance. Lucky Nairn is a flexible man, clearly.

24'

Wales tap, lose a penalty

Wales take the chance to tap quickly from a free kick at the back of the scrum, but only get as far as the 22.

They’re caught holding on to the ball though, as Nairn Moncrieff mops up the ruck, nabbing the ball.

19'

TRY Scotland! Freddy Douglas crosses over

And rumble they do! The big men charge it up the middle before some slcik hands finds the outside.

They’ve crossed over! The plaudits go to Douglas. Logan carried hard, before quick ball from the bottom of the ruck saw it popped to Douglas to fall over the line on the left hand side.

Urwin nails the conversion! Scotland take the lead. (Scotland 7 – 0 Wales)

Image

22'

Wales chances after a penalty

A penalty for Wales now, as Douglas catches the Welsh fullback in the air, only just.

It’s the right call though. It gives new Harri, Wilde, a chance to boot the ball down to Scotland’s 40m line.

17'

Penalty for Scotland

Wales weren’t rolling out of that tackle, giving the hosts a chance to put it close to the corner for a rumble.

16'

Change for Wales

An early sub for Wales as fly half Harri Ford is helped from the pitch – replaced by another Harri – Harri Wilde.

14'

Chance for Scotland now

Urwin clears up to halfway, the lineout is won by Wales, but the jackal penalty is won by captain fantastic, Freddy Douglas.

Urwin prods it down to the Welsh 22 for Scotland’s first real attack of the match.

15'

Chance goes begging

But it’s lost and Wales now have the chance to clear their lines.

A brief glimpse for Scotland, but it was only that, sadly.

12'

Wales probing, but Scotland get a lifeline

They kick to the corner, win the throw, and begin to heave and ho towards Scotland’s line.

It goes down, and through the pop phases we go. Closer they inch, but the Welsh are now losing ground, being driven back.

Scotland come out trumps as outside centre Elijah Evans tries to stab a grubber through and it bobbles out for a lineout to the home side.

11'

Wales penalty in Scotland’s 22

Here come Wales though, after the break in play.

And they win the penalty after a clean line break into Scotland’s 22.

It’s for a tackle off the ball on the scrum half. Dangerous times for the Scots.

10'

Fast-paced opening 10 minutes

It’s been a bruising first 10 minutes here at Hive.

Wales have had the better rolls of the dice, but Scotland have just about kept the score level.

10'

Play breaks

Play has stopped here as Welsh fly half Ford is down for treatment.

8'

Scotland putting pressure on themselves

An incredible run from Bowen sees him travel from deep within his own half after catching a returning Scotland kick.

He beats one, two, three, four and then put on the jets towards the line, only to be scragged by Brown just metres out.

Wales are adjudged to be holding on to the ball and the penalty goes the way of Scotland.

6'

Back and forth we go

Moss is fine to carry on, and the scrum is reset after going down the first time.

It’s a scrum penalty to Scotland, but the resulting kick is turned over by the Welsh and thumped down field, only to be regathered by Brown right on his line.

He does well to scamper back into the field of play, and Urwin does better to clear Scotland’s lines.

3'

First play goes to ground for Wales

The first chance for Wales comes to nothing as the ball is flung wide from a maul near halfway, only to be dropped by fullback Tom Bowen.

Scrum feed to Scotland. Charlie Moss is down with a leg complaint, so we’ll wait for him to receive treatment.

1'

We are underway at Hive!

Referee Katsuki Furuse blows his whistle and we’re underway here.

Wales fly half Harri Ford goes deep and it’s claimed nicely by Jack Brown on the edge of the 22. Scrum half Noah Cowan clears up to halfway, only for it to be sent straight back, and marked by Matthew Urwin.

19:12

Teams are out!

And the anthems have been sung – we are just a couple of minutes away from kick off here at Hive.

18:51

The energy is building… we have just 25 minutes to the whistle.

18:48

Scotland are out, and warming up

18:45

Couple of things to watch out for tonight

Freddy Douglas captains Scotland again tonight. He’s the only Scot to ever receive a full Scotland cap and then play for the Under-20s side.

On the bench, wearing the number 20 jersey is Mark Fyffe, who – should he be called upon – will make his U20 debut tonight.

In the week, Scotland coach Kenny Murray said: “While we were disappointed with some of our errors against England, there were positives to take from aspects of our game and performance, and we’ve had two weeks to learn from it.

“Again, it’s about playing well for the full game. We’ve had spells in all three games so far where the players have produced what they’re capable of but we’re really focused on delivering an 80-minute performance.

“We had a good away support in Newcastle last time out, which was brilliant for the players. Our two games at Hive Stadium so far have both had excellent atmospheres and the crowd have been right behind us. They play a big part and we want to thank them with a performance they can be proud of on Friday night.”

18:42

As it stands

Wales go into tonight’s match third on the ladder with two wins to their name from the opening three fixtures.

A bonus point win for the visitors could see them go as high as first place.

On the other hand, Scotland are yet to notch a win. But, a bonus point win could see them reach up to fourth place – overtaking Italy and Ireland on the way.

18:40

Coin, tossed!

Scotland captain Freddy Douglas has tossed the coin with Wales captain Harry Beddall looking on. Wales will be kicking off, with Scotland attacking the Riverside Stand.

We are 35 minutes from kick off!

18:34

Tonight’s match officials…

In the middle for tonight is Japan’s Katsuki Furuse – here is his team.

Ref: Katsuki Furuse
