Full time debrief

It was a clinical display to end Scotland’s Skyscanner Pacific Tour.

Two tries inside the first quarter of an hour, plus a third and fourth towards the end of the half saw the visitors go into half time comfortable leaders, 22-0.

A Samoan resistance threatened briefly after Grant Gilchrist added a fifth try, but ultimately Scotland were too strong, scoring seven tries in total.

Stand outs today for the visitors were Jamie Dobie and Fergus Burke, who ran the show when on the field.

But the front row also deserve a shout out for their total dominance, racking up numerous penalties won.

That concludes our coverage for today’s match. We’ll next be back with a men’s international in the Autumn Nations Series at the beginning of November at home in Scottish Gas Murrayfield. Bye for now.

80'

Full time: Samoa 12 – 41 Scotland

With about 90 seconds left in the match, Samoa win a penalty for the tackler not releasing. Umaga again pops it towards the corner, for a final hurrah for the home side.

The lineout isn’t clean though and it ends up in touch off the knee of a Scottish player. It’s deemed to be a knock on initially by Samoa, and the final play of the match will be a Scottish scrum inside their 22.

Down it goes and a penalty is given. Horne taps and puts it into the stands to end the match.

77'

TRY Scotland – Turner

A Scottish scrum inside the 22 wins the visitors another penalty and Hastings kicks to the corner for what could be one final rumble.

Turner throws to Gilchrist and the rumble comes. Turner at the back of the scrum drives and drives and dives! He’s over. That’s the seventh Scottish try of the match. Clinically executed there.

Horne’s conversion is good. (Samoa 12 – 41 Scotland, 77 mins)

74'

Final changes come

A second penalty sees Scotland advance upfield, and an audacious chip and chase from Hastings nearly comes off, but it’s claimed behind the try line by Samoa, who dot down for a goal line drop out.

Marshall Sykes is coming for Dobie, and it looks like we’ll be seeing Christie-Onyeama on the wing for the final six minutes…. let’s see how that goes!

70'

Bullet dodged, Scottish penalty

Samoa win a second penalty, this time for Nathan McBeth playing the 9. Again they kick for touch, this time inside the 22.

Running off the back, the Samoan forwards go to work, crashing towards the 5m line. They do cross the line, but there was some shepherding involved and the referee brings play back for a Scottish penalty.

Hastings clears.

68'

Samoa penalty

Samoa win a scrum penalty just inside their half, and hook a kick into touch in Scottish territory for a set piece move. Burke will remain off, following his HIA.

64'

TRY Samoa – Paia’aua

The kick is good and Samoa’s lineout is right on Scotland’s 5m line. The drive is good and they win another penalty from a collapsed maul.

Again they go to a lineout, and the ball is presented for 9. The forwards get moving as they look to break the gain line. On the fourth attempt, the ball is slipped to Duncan Paia’aua, who spins through the tackle and can dive over for Manu Samoa’s second try. Umaga’s conversion is good. (Samoa 12 – 34, 64 mins)

59'

Samoa making moves

Samoa surge into the 22 through Tomasi Alosio, but Andy Onyeama-Christie gets over the ball straight away and wins the penalty for the Scots, allowing them to clear upfield.

The lineout is good and the Scots look to connect a set piece, but it’s lost forward as Burke slips. Samoa win a scrum penalty.

Adam Hastings will come on for Fergus Burke, as Burke has been taken off for a HIA.

55'

TRY Scotland! Rowe

From a free kick off a scrum outside the Samoan 22, Horne taps quickly and flicks it wide left for his runners to get going.

They crash into the 22 and the pick and goes get underway. With phases piling up, Dobie goes to Burke, who reaches all the way to the 5m line, before popping the ball to Rowe to dive in at the corner flag and touch down for the sixth Scottish try of the evening.

Horne takes over conversion duties and he strikes the post, bouncing away. (Samoa 5 – 34 Scotland, 55 mins)

Cam Henderson is coming on for Gregor Brown, Fin Richardson steps on for his first cap, replacing Elliot Millar Mills and Ben Muncaster is on for Rory Darge.

51'

TRY Samoa – Nee Nee

Scotland try to build out from the back, flinging it wide left for Rowe and Reed to see what they can magic up.

It’s laid back to Horne, and he flicks it back inside unsighted, right into the hands of Benjamin Nee-Nee, who canters in for Samoa’s first try, untouched.

That’s got the home crowd going. Umaga can’t convert from the sideline. (Samoa 5 – 29, 51 mins)

48'

Samoan break, chance

Niko Jones breaks for Samoa, straight down the middle from the ruck. He’s only just on the field, and is finally brought down on the 22. They win a scrum too for a knock on in the ruck from a Scottish hand.

What can the home side do here?

45'

TRY Scotland – Gilchrist!

Rowe is the recipient of Hutchinson’s quick snap pass from a dropped Samoan pass, and Rowe hacks the ball down field. He almost dots down over the try line but it’s just behind him and Samoa secure the goal line drop out.

Scotland are back on the attack though, and camped on the Samoan try line. The forwards go to work, and a snap pass from Horne at the base of the ruck goes to Gilchrist, who barges his way over for Scotland’s fifth try of the evening! Burke makes no mistake this time. (Samoa 0 – 29 Scotland, 45 mins)

Dobie is still on, apologies for that. Horne has come on for Steyn.

41'

We’re back underway

Burke gets us underway and Scotland win it straight back. The Scots go side to side, looking for a gap, but Samoa get over the ball well and win a penalty for the dark blues holding on.

George Horne is on for Dobie and George Turner is on for Ashman.

40'

Final throes in the first half

Scotland opt to run back the restart this time, and Dobie snipes from a ruck down the blindside, flipping a clever offload to Burke, who almost gets away but for a brilliant tackle dragging him into touch.

Samoa win a penalty for Scotland hanging on in the ruck and they tap and go, as we enter the 41st minute of play. Clever hands from Samoa see them enter the 22, but Tuitama is brought down and pulled into touch.

That’ll do for the first half says the referee, and they run down the tunnel with Scotland’s four tries to Samoa’s none the difference.

36'

TRY Scotland – Kyle Steyn!

Scotland clear from the deep restart through a Dobie box kick, and Umaga goes to the heavens in midfield, but it’s easily claimed by Kyle Rowe under no pressure.

A clever, low box kick from Dobie on halfway secures Scotland a 50-22 thanks to a very kind bounce of the ball. Immediately they go wide, all the way to the right, and Kyle Steyn canters in for a simple try!

The pass from Burke set it up to Rowe, who carried well and popped to Steyn to go in for the fourth try, with about four minutes on the clock to half time. Burke lines up his fourth attempt (third from the touchline) and can’t quite nail the extras. (Samoa 0 – 22 Scotland, 36 mins)

31'

TRY Scotland – Reed!

The scrum is a good one and a HUGE cut out pass from the base from Dobie skips out everyone along the left flank and into the grateful arms of Reed.

He skips in untouched by the left corner flag for Scotland’s third try of the match! Burke can’t add the extras this time. (Samoa 0 – 17 Scotland, 31 mins)

30'

Big chance from a skewed clearance

Samoa’s clearing kick doesn’t quite exit the 22 and Scotland have another chance at an attack.

Phases quickly pile up in the shadow of the posts, and they win a penalty for the Samoan defensive line being offside.

The Scots opt for a scrum, which has been dominant thus far.

28'

Electric attack from Scotland

Scotland clear through McDowall, an excellent clearing kick it was too.

After a short period with the ball, fly half Jacob Umaga goes for an audacious cross field kick, but it’s just overcooked and it goes out on the full, so we’ll go back to halfway for a Scottish lineout.

The lineout and driving maul is good and they go blindisde through Dobie, then Burke, who carries well and pops the pass to Reed.

He speeds away into the 22 and flicks it back inside for Burke, who beats another and just gets caught on the edge of the tryline, dragged into touch in doing so. Great work there from Scotland.

25'

Scotland win scrum on their tryline

The lineout goes the way of Samoa and they patiently build phases inside the Scottish 22.

But it’s lost forward after about 10 phases and Scotland survive unscathed this time. That intercept just shows the danger Samoa possess even on defence!

22'

Samoan intercept!

A penalty for a tackle off the ball goes the way of Scotland on the Samoan 22 line, and Burke kicks to the corner for a rumble.

The first phase goes to ground through Ashman and the subsequent pass is intercepted by winger Tuna Tuitama and here goes Samoa!

It’s a breakaway from Tuitama and Duncan Paia’aua, who march all the way into the Scottish 22, before they’re scragged into touch.

20'

Promising Scottish break

A promising break from Scotland down the left comes to nothing as what would have been a pass to release Reed goes instead to ground and rolls harmlessly into touch.

18'

Scotland in control early

It’s been a break neck beginning to the start of the half, with Scotland notching two early scores.

Samoa, as always, look dangerous in open space – but for now, they are well contained.

13'

TRY Scotland! Rory Hutchinson

After a nuber of phases inside the 22, McDowall stabs through a grubber for his outside centre Rory Hutchinson to latch onto and cross besides the posts to score the second try of the evening.

Burke makes no mistake with this one, converting with ease. (Samoa 0 – 12 Scotland, 13 mins)

5'

TRY Scotland! Ewan Ashman

Ewan Ashman crosses over from the back of a driving maul to open the scoring for the Scots!

Gilchrist won the lineout and Ashman drives over.

Burke’s conversion goes astray though. (Samoa 0 – 5 Scotland, 5 mins)

4'

Scotland pressurising early

Good work in defence by Stafford secures a scrum for Scotland in their own 22. Scotland win penalty at the subsequent set piece.

Dobie makes lighting break up the left touchline and Reed’s blistering tackle secures 5 metre lineout.

1'

And we’re underway

Samoa kick off, and it’s Fergus Burke who rescues a kick into Scotland’s 22 and Scotland clear to a lineout near their 10 metre line.

8:34

Anthems sung, Sipi Tau underway

We’re running blind here, I’m afraid, as we wait for the BBC stream to go live.

Twenty minutes from kick off now, and the weather looks steady.

It’s currently 11 degrees, dropping to about 9 degrees over the course of the game. Wind gusts of about 10mph, again dropping over the course of the match.

No rain in sight, but it is Auckland. Fingers crossed for a dry game.

8:03

Final preparations

The team has just finished their warm-ups on the pitch, heading back down the tunnel for a final team talk.

8:00

The big news this week

The big news in Gregor Townsend’s team announcement this week was of debutant Fin Richardson donning jersey 18.

The Glasgow Warrior previously donned the blue jersey against the Māori All Blacks, but is today in line for his first international test cap.

And Gregor opted for a 6-2 split on the bench, speaking to Samoa’s immense power and utility in their forward pack.

Nathan McBeth and George Turner offer front row options from the bench with Cameron Henderson and Marshall Sykes able to offer support in the second row.

Ben Muncaster has recovered from his leg injury sustained in the first game of tour with George Horne and Adam Hastings also named on the bench.

7:55
