Full time: Georgia 22 – 7 Scotland

Georgia secure ninth place with their 15-point victory over Scotland.

Scotland battered away and were unlucky not to be awarded a try or two in the second half.

No matter though, the home side were good value for their four tries and kept Scotland at bay for large parts of the match.

Kerr Yule’s record breaking 25th appearance couldn’t quite be topped off with a win, and Scotland end the World Rugby U20 Championships in 10th place, a year after their promotion into the top flight.

That brings to a close our coverage of the game tonight. Thank you for tuning in.

72'

Chances go begging

Scotland win another scrum penalty after the front row collapsed and Coates thrashes it away to the corner for a rumble at the line.

Moss wins the throw and Cowan flings it to Yule, but it’s lost in contact and Georgia get another let off, clearing it away down to the 10m line inside maroon territory.

70'

Once again, so close for Scotland

A Georgian lineout on their 22 is won, but dropped in the air, and Scotland win a scrum and a great attacking opportunity.

Scotland win the scrum and it’s flung out wide right to Brown who speeds off towards the try line, and dragged down just a metre out. The ball from the ruck is intercepted by a Georgian defender and scooped away into touch on the edge of the 22.

Mark Fyffe is on for Ollie Duncan.

66'

So close for Scotland

It’s won by Scotland though and they run it back through Yule. Losing it in contact, it’s hacked ahead by Georgia so far that it goes dead, and Scotland opt for a scrum.

After the first phase, Scotland win a penalty for a high tackle on Brown and Urwin finds touch near the 10m line into Georgian territory.

Douglas breaks through and reaches all the way up to the 22m line. It falls to Stephen on the right wing, who steps inside beautifully and he almost reaches the line, but is dragged down. Shearer takes it up but holds onto the ball too long and is penalised.

61'

Dodgy times at the back

A clearing kick from Coates inside the 22 is charged down by a Georgian back and it’s almost regathered by the try line, but for a lucky bounce into touch. Scotland have the lineout on their 5m line.

They do eventually clear through Coates up to halfway.

59'

TRY Georgia – Shioshvili

Georgia go over the top from the first phase off the lineout, and Brown mistimes the jump, letting it bounce into the 22.

Patterson can’t read the bounce either, and he slips trying to regather. Shioshvili is the fastest to react and he dots down on the left hand side. Bolkvadze can’t add the extras. (Georgia 22 – 7 Scotland, 59 mins)

Isaac Coates is on for Cowan, Charlie Moss is on for Dylan Cockburn, and Noah Cowan for Patterson.

57'

Kick-tac-toe

Scotland win another scrum penalty, driving on the angle there, and it allows them to clear up to halfway.

Georgia’s front row is being replaced now after the last few scrums resulting in Scottish advantages. Jake Shearer is on for Ollie Blyth-Lafferty.

Scotland’s lineout is overthrown and the maroons hoof it away – and a game of forceback ensues.

It eventually ends when Patterson goes for a kick over the top from halfway and it goes out on the full.

54'

Handling errors mar good play from both sides

The scrum set piece runs smoothly and Scotland exit through a clever Brown-Yule combination.

They reach all the way up to about 20m inside Georgian territory before losing it forward. The Georgians engage the scrum early though and the Scots opt for a bomb from the free kick.

Georgia clear well and the Scots lose the ball on their 22 line.

Will Pearce is on for Oli McKenna, Jack Hocking is on for Findlay and Joe Roberts for Seb Stephens.

50'

Tit for tat in the settling period

As if to show his frustration, Douglas jackals beautifully on the edge of his 22 and cheers when the penalty is given his way.

The clearing kick is a good one and Scotland are inside Georgian territory. Georgia wrestle it back on the edge of their 22 and the box kick goes up.

Brown wins it in the air, but loses it in contact and Georgia are back on the ball inside Scottish territory now.

It’s lost backwards on the 22 and it’s hacked forward by scrum half Spanderashvili, but his kick goes dead and Scotland have a scrum to reset.

46'

Scotland try ruled out again

Georgia hoof it away upfield and Kheladze is clattered in a Logan-Douglas sandwich – dropping the ball in doing so.

So we’ll have a scrum in the midfield. It’s won and hoofed away downfield by Scotland.

The bounce is perfect and the chasing pack pressurise Georgia into a mistake on their goal line. Winger Keshelava drops the ball and it’s collected by Patterson, who dives over! It’s a try!

The TMO is speaking to the referee though again. It looks like Patterson might be offside from the initial kick on halfway.

Scotland are denied a try again, unfortunately.

41'

TMO check though…

They want to go upstairs for the try though, and they’re checking for a shift drive at the lineout.

They’re saying that Douglas does not stay connected to the jumper and that Oli McKenna has gone in front of the catcher, therefore obstructing the defenders.

The try is overruled, and Georgia maintain their 10 point lead.

41'

We’re back underway! TRY SCOTLAND!!

Urwin gets us back underway, and straight away Scotland wins a penalty for Georgia hanging on.

They kick to the corner and the lineout drive is fantastic. Douglas comes off the back and spears towards the corner flag, and he’s over!

What a start for Scotland there. Urwin’s conversion attempt is wide this time. (Georgia 17 – 12 Scotland, 41 mins)

40'

Last throes of the first half

Georgia clear after a mess of an overthrown lineout where no home team jumpers jumped.

It means Scotland have the final say in this half and Logan breaks through again, and he’s followed well by his team mates.

They’re on the edge of the 22 and the phases are mounting. Wide it goes to Logan, but as he bumps into contact, the ball comes out of his hands and into touch, bringing the half to an end. What a response that last 10-15 minutes it was from Scotland.

38'

Scotland nearly sneak through

Scotland win a scrum penalty on the halfway line with about two minutes left to play in the half and Urwin thumps it up to the 22 line.

Again the set piece is good and Jack Brown sneaks through a hole, breaching the 22.

They look for gaps as they go side to side, and Brown receives it again, this time wide right. He looks to step inside but is dragged down by a sea of maroon, and into touch.

35'

Scotland win a penalty, cauterise the wound

Scotland win a penalty for not releasing on their 22 line from the restart, and clear up to halfway.

With five minutes to go, they’ll be looking to consolidate and stop the bleeding from when they were down to 13.

34'

TRY Scotland!! Reuben Logan crashes over

On comes Yule too now, so Scotland are back to the full complement.

Scotland win a penalty on the 40m line for a Georgian player not rolling away, and they add insult to their own injury by not giving the ball back, so they’re marched an extra 10 metres.

Urwin pumps it to the corner for Scotland’s first real rumble at the line here.

It’s a well worked set piece move and Logan ends up with the ball in hand at high velocity. He crashes over, almost untouched there! Beautifully done. Urwin’s conversion is good too, reducing the deficit. (Georgia 17 – 7 Scotland, 34 mins)

30'

TRY Georgia – Gurtskaia

Scotland win a scrum on the 10m line for keeping try scorer Shioshvili up off a lineout.

The scrum is strong for the team in blue and it’s flicked to Urwin for another clever kick in behind. It bobbles into touch just outside Georgia’s try line and they’re back under pressure.

Georgia clear well and the Scottish lineout is lost. they go well to the left and drive all the way up to the 22.

Back across the sea of maroon comes, and Mate Gurtskaia is found off the pass of scrum half Giorgi Spanderashvili, and he bashes his way over the try line from close range.

Bolkvadze can’t add the extras, and Freddy Douglas is coming back on now. (Georgia 17 – 0 Scotland, 30 mins)

25'

Nearly, nearly for Scotland

Scotland are down to 13 now for the foreseeable future and have a big task on their hands.

The visitors do well to pressurise Georgia into a rushed clearing kick and the lineout is a good one. They go left and Urwin stabs through a kick for Jed Findlay to chase into the 22.

The bounce is kind for Scotland and Findlay recollects! He beats one and hands off to Watson, who is scragged down, popping it up to Patterson, but he can’t hold on and loses it with the try line at his beckoning.

22'

Scotland yellow card and a Georgian try

They kick to the corner and drive again at the line. It’s held up, but Scotland are offside again.

The double peep of the whistle isn’t good news for the Scots either. This time it’s Yule who has been singled out and will also go to the bin for 10 minutes.

They opt for the scrum and Mikheili Shioshvili doesn’t hang around – he rips it off the back of the scrum and sprints at the line. Two would-be tacklers clinging on, but he’s too strong, and scores.

Bolkvadze nails the conversion this time. (Georgia 12 – 0 Scotland, 22 mins)

20'

Yellow card – Douglas

Georgia are back on the ball and probing away down the left. They have another penalty advantage, and the attack goes nowehere, so it’s called back.

The referee wants a word with Douglas as the victim of a continuation of penalties, rather than anything in particular. It certainly wasn’t malicious, he was just trapped at the bottom of the ruck and couldn’t escape.

Scotland down to 14 for 10 minutes.

18'

Brilliant defence from Douglas

Urwin’s restart is overcooked and it’s out on the full, gifting the maroons a scrum on halfway.

Dzodzuashvili thumps it away downfield and Georgia’s lineout is on the edge of the Scottish 22.

It’s rumbled away off the back but in contact, it’s stolen by Douglas on the deck and thumped back from whence it came by Hector Patterson. A brilliant piece of defensive work by Douglas.

15'

TRY Georgia – Kheladze

They go to the lineout and the maul gets a-rumblin’.

They suck Scotland in and the captain Kheladze darts off the back and through a gap to dive over for the first try of the match.

Giorgi Bolkvadze’s conversion misses. (Georgia 5 – 0 Scotland, 15 mins)

13'

Big Georgian chances now

The Georgian lineout is overthrown, but they get away with it as Mikheili Shioshvili sprints onto it and bursts through the first and second line of Scottish defence.

Douglas drags him down on the 22 line, but they recycle well and the phases are building with Scotland back-pedaling.

The forwards go to work and break inside the 5m line. Under penalty advantage for offside, Georgia plunge onward and onward. Finally it goes out the back but it’s lost in the scramble and the referee brings play back for the penalty.

11'

Chance lost

The scrum is a good one and the ball is flicked to Kerr Yule, who runs it straight into contact, but the ball is lost in the collision and play is called to a halt.

Georgia now have a scrum on their tryline, and they win a penalty from it, and are able to clear easily.

8'

Good moves from the Scots

After a poor up and under from Georgia, Freddy Douglas comes out with it on halfway and drives powerfully forward. Urwin puts in a clever kick behind the Georgian defence and they’re caught napping.

A hurried clearance finally comes and Scotland have a lineout about 15m inside Georgian territory. Much better from the Scots.

The lineout is good and Scotland gain mileage through the left flank and Ferg Watson. They go back inside and Reuben Logan clatters inside the 22. They reach the 5m line, but unfortunately the ref has got in the way of a Scottish runner, and so we’ll have a Scottish scrum on the 5m line.

5'

Early scrummaging tactics

A short hand free kick for an early scrum engagement against Scotland sees Georgia tap and go quickly up to the edge of Scotland’s 22.

The attack looks promising but Dzodzuashvili drops it cold and gives the visitors a chance to reset their scrum and exit.

2'

Big let off for Scotland immediately

Georgia win the lineout and drive. Their horsepower is immense and Scotland can’t handle it – they rumble over and the referee blows for a try.

Captain Shota Kheladze goes over. But the TMO may have saved Scotland’s blushes here, as there was obstruction in the lineout in the lead up!

The score remains 0-0 and Scotland have a big let off.

1'

We are underway!

Whistler Griffin Colby gets stand off Temuri Dzodzuashvili, and the ball underway, and it’s cleared away by Matthew Urwin.

They kick straight back though and win a penalty for holding on in the tackle, giving Georgia a chance straight away for a lineout drive.

19:29

Here we go!

Georgia sang passionately first, then it was the turn of the Scots.

Great support from those donning blue and white in the crowd too. Here we go!

19:25

Here come the teams

How did Scotland end up here?

With 20 minutes until kick off, let’s revisit how Scotland ended up here.

Kenny Murray’s side started the competition with one of the toughest tasks possible, taking on the reigning U20 champions, England. That ended in a 56-19 loss, but promising signs were there for Scotland.

A bonus point loss to Australia followed, in a 34-24 scoreline that flattered the Aussies a little at the end.

The pool stage ended with a loss to tonight’s finalists, South Africa, 73-14. The side bounced back with a magical win against Ireland, 22-21, to secure their spot in tonight’s ninth-place playoff.

19:05

Results from around the grounds

Elsewhere around the grounds today has seen Ireland prevail 38-37 over Spain to clinch 11th place.

Italy defeated Wales 31-23 in the 7th and 8th playoff, while Australia thrashed England to nail on fifth-place, 68-40 the end score.

Argentina also defeated France to clinch the bronze medal equivalent – 38-35 in that match.

The Championship final sees the Baby Boks take on the Baby Blacks, (South Africa versus New Zealand) kicking off at the same time as Scotland tonight.

18:57

Coin, tossed!

News just in: Scotland will be receiving the kick off in the first half, and they will be playing into the sun.

Although it’s 27 degrees right now, we look to be in for some rain, probably in the first half. That will cool off the temperature – which will be no doubt welcomed by all in attendance.

18:54

Georgia’s run up to today’s match

Georgia will be all too familiar with the Stadio San Michele, having played there twice already in this competition.

Their pool matches saw a bonus point loss to Ireland (35-28) and a loss against finalists, New Zealand (38-19), before a hard-fought 19-all draw against Italy.

Both the Ireland and Italy matches were played on this pitch. And their most recent match – the ninth-place semi-final – was a win against Spain, 43-19.

18:48

The big news out of camp this week…

Kerr Yule will set a new appearance record with 25, starting what will be his final game for Scotland U20 at inside centre. A huge achievement for the young man.

Head coach Kenny Murray said of the achievement:

“What Kerr will achieve on Saturday is down to all the hard work he has been since he came into the squad at 17 years old back in 2023. It’s a record that will be hard for anyone to top and I know the squad want to mark the occasion with a win.”

Yule will be joined in the centres by co-captain Johnny Ventisei on the outside. Fergus Watson is selected on the left wing with Brown on the right.

In the backs, Hector Patterson starts at scrum-half and will combine with stand-off Matthew Urwin, the only back to start all five games, to make the half-backs. The backline is completed by Jed Findlay at full-back.
