FOSROC Academies back in action over weekend
The FOSROC Academy U17 and U18 players were involved in regional matches at Oriam across the weekend.
On Saturday, the U17s played an academy festival where Caledonia took on Edinburgh and Glasgow and the West played The Borders and East Lothian.
Edinburgh were 15-5 winners against Caledonia, while Glasgow and the West won 35-15 against The Borders and East Lothian.
For the U18s, it was FOSROC Academy finals day on Sunday. With the Borders and East Lothian leading Caledonia in the second half, it was Caledonia who eventually ran out 50-28 winners.
In another entertaining contest, Edinburgh came from behind to beat Glasgow and the West 36-28.
Head of Pathways John Fletcher said: “The purpose of the U17 games was to give the players an opportunity to put into practice what they have been working on in training since the festival in October, and it also allowed the coaches to assess how the players are developing.
“We value high ball in play time and the game being fast, with all players encourage to play at a fast pace.
“I was really impressed with the players intent to play fast in attack and move the ball to the best space. We witnessed lots of players demonstrating a triple threat of running, kicking and passing.
“The defence was significantly improved from the October festival with lots of good decisions and a good level of aggression and physicality.
“The coaches were excellent, creating a positive environment throughout the day, encouraging the players lots of freedom to try things.
“The U18s played two very entertaining games with some outstanding tries. They all gave it everything for the full 70 minutes and were excellent on both sides of the ball.
“Everyone involved in the U18 programme should be very proud.”
The U18s now turn their focus to the 1872 Cup game where Glasgow Warriors U18 play Edinburgh Rugby U18 on Sunday 5 February.
